Z3 engine swaps... Hi... I'm thinking of buying a Z3... we don't have the M roadster in israel, and only 1 m coupe... my question is: is it possible to swap an m roadster engine into the 1.8 z3? if so, what is required to do so? thanks.

You will need engine, wiring harness, motor mounts, You will need to upgrade the shocks and springs. I think that is all I believe the tranny bolts up. You might need the flywheel and clutch. I would check on Bimmerforums.com

The chasis should be mostly similar, the m had special bracing though so go ahead and grab that. Realistically though grabbing this lower priced model and upgrading would probably be the same price as import. -Spargo

| I already have an S50B30, 5sp, clutch, fly, harness and front/rear E36 M3 brakes. I'm thinking of buying a Z3, and was wondering if anyone has experience swapping S50's. Would I be better off starting on a 6cyl? Or could I get away with upgrading a 1.9? Any help is appreciated. -cheers.

since the first z3s were made in 1996 your not going to be able to run an s50 in a od2 car, since you will need an obd1 dme to run the s50 sbecouse the crank sensor is in the block near the trany on the obd2 and in the front of the engine on a obd1 you can go backwards but not the other way around. you could make it work but you wont pass state emisions test with an obd1 dme if you have that kind of thing some place dont.but if you dont the 2.8 would be better since you could sell the engine and use every thing it has being a six already
