Tranny down I repeat Tranny down

It feels serious but maybe someone can tell me otherwise. The problem on my 97 Z3 roadster happened when I did a hard downshift into 3rd from 4th. When I went to get back into 4th I wouldnt get into gear so I went and tried 5th I was able to get in gear there. I pulled over to find out what broke and I ran through all my gears in nuetral it was fine for several upshifts and downshifts but then it had the same problem with not getting into 4th unless it was from 5th. When I'm driving and coming up on a stop it has a hard time getting in to 2nd and 1st if I do it with effort really slow it will get into those gears. It will drive in all gears it just requires something odd to get it there. Someone I spoke to told me it may be a linkage problem but they couldnt tell me how I could check. Any comments will be appreciated.
