X5, is it really capable of off-roading?

I was wondering if the x5 is as capable as people are led to believe. I am under the inpression that an x5 can perform as well as a Range rover or Land Rover (discovery) Since it was owned by BMW for a while. I am considering getting one in the next 2 years and was wondering if anyone has taken it off roading and was suprised/dissapointed. Thanks alot

it is a SUV. so it is capable of off roading.

wrong...it's an SAV. sport activity vehicle. truely, it's more of a high performance road car. but it "can" go off road. but don't expect to get RR perfoamance on dirt and such.

The car would be good for some trail running, buuuut thats about it. I mean the damn thing has high performance rubber and not a lot of ground clearance, what is to be expected. But I guess to answer your question, it can be taken "off-road," but it is not anywhere near what a land rover is as far as off-road ability goes.

I think it would have the same offroad ability as a rally car(i.e. dirt roads, etc) but with more ground clearence. In no way is it capable of rock crawling and serious trail running such as the rubicon trail.

Ummmh, no. Range Rovers are probably the most competent off-road vehicles in the world. There is no way that an X5 (basically a tall all-wheel drive 5-series) could ever--ever--compete off-road with a Range Rover. It simply will not and cannot happen--and it was never supposed to.

The X5 was built with the following vision statement:
1) on-road driving feel and composure
2) anyone have some 19" wheels?
3) oh, it might need to go off-road a little bit

The X is no Rover, it can be taking off road, but its just not a good idea to do any heavy duty off roading...........I never would.

Yeah, an X5 doesn't even have a low-range on the transfer case, definitely not very good off a beaten trail..

And the Range Rover is so not even the most capable SUV.. the new Grand Cherokee (WJ) with quadra-drive and the 4.7 V8 will walk all over the Range, as would a MB Galandewagen..

I think sec edh meant to say land rovers, or atleast I hope he did. But if you want the ultimate off-road vehicle, look no further than a Hummer H1, this is the cream of the crop of off-road vehicles.

I know the the X5 doesnt not have high clearance, especially not adjustable like the RR. But I was expecting more from the X5. I guess that's why its called an SAV. Thanks for the feddback.

Ahh, completely forgot about that Galandewagen thing.

Hummer, too...missing cars left and right here...okay, so the Rovers aren't the best of the best.
