is 5% tint illegal in california

hey i was just wondering if 5% tint is illegal in cali i have heard it's not but i just wanted to make sure cuz i just got my windows tintend 5% only the back and i didn't touch the front ones.

No after market tint is legal in CA ....at least thats what i read

but its a slim chance you will get a ticket for it

rear tint of whatever % is fine.

you aren't allowed tint up front though unless you have a compelling reason like a doctors prescription.

those are just the rules....doesn't mean you have to follow them

cops most of the time wont pull you over just for tint, but if you give them another reason to pull you over, they will probaby write up the tint.

yea on my cars I tint the front the lightest % (I forget what that is) and the back one step darker, so there is not a huge difference like some people have like no tint on the front and limo in back.....never been pulled over for it.

That is correct, any percentage is prefectly fine on the back windows. But, you can only tint the fronts if you have a doctor's note like I do. But, I have yet to tint the Bimmer's windows anyway, lol.

the reason you are not allowed to tint the front window is because it does not allow the window to shatter as originally intended by the manufacturer , the tint makes the window stay in virtually one peice thus eliminating the entire purpose of safety glass

Tint is a secondary offense so they can't pull you over for only that they have to have something else on you to get you for it.

how do you get a doc note? My doc is a good friend of my moms tell me what he has to do so its ok. Because i want to do limo all around. hehehehe

It not that difficult just need a note from a doctor and take it to the DMV from the laws here in VA.

You ask for it. It is SUPPOSE to be for people that have VERY fair skin (like albino) since they don't do well in the sun for long periods. One of the OG guys here in San Diego has that note and has been cited 5 times. The cop doesn't usually care on the scene about it (although it has helped him get out of MORE issued citations than those 5). It is up to the judge after the ticket has been issued as to whether or not the note REALLY has any legal bearing. If you are dark skinned (like tan), you're not going to get away with it. But if you are an albino, or red headed with 'fair' skin, you can usually get the judge to believe the Dr's note.

And no tint on the front windows has NOTHING to do with safety glass. There actually IS A law on the books saying that you CAN have tint on the front windows up to a certain %, but it HAS to be certified by the tint shop to comply with the law AND the shop has to be on file as certified to apply the said correct % of tint. They issue you a certificate when they tint the car saying that it complies with the law. HOWEVER, there is nothing at that time to prevent you from going to another shop and getting it tinted darker, but keeping the original certificate. Since the ORIGINAL shop is then on the hook for the tint job and THEY will get in trouble too if you get cited for it and produce the tint cert, they tend to not hand them out all that often. Damn dishonnest people!
