Just installed a new Shift Light
Check it out... the light is mounted on the steering hub, and wired through the OEM cable reel (SRS wiring), so it turns with the wheel:

The access panels are removed, there are no visible cables; for installation you need switched +12V, tacho signal, and ground, on my installation I wired the tacho and +12V through the OEM cable reel, and used the hub for ground, as with the horn.
