| i'm 17 with a M3 here is what i have to say..... I haven’t taken the time to post many threads here at DTMPOWER.NET, but I think I would take the time to post one here. I am 17 and drive a 1997 M3 sedan. The only modification in which I have done to the car is my stereo (Two 12" Eclipse subs with an amp to fire 500 watts into each sub, and a capacitor) I Plan on modifying the car in the spring time, however for the time being, I enjoy the power in which the car already has. I have driven to Lake George on many occasions throughout the past summer. On the 40-minute or so minute drive, I have found myself racing amongst other cars. One happens to be a 350z. The individual driving the black 350z, whoever you are, eyed me down as he sped past me in the left lane as I was in the middle of the three lanes. Due to the effects of some ganja smoking, all I recall at that point was that I found myself on a mission to catch up to, and indeed I was able to. I guess he waited for me.....and so without a doubt, I took his invitation to "play." The two cars were pretty much going the same speed at times I was doing better, but not once can I remember when he was able to pass me. I recall getting into the right lane and him being in the left lane, and at that point I was going to see who was faster after all. We pretty much kept up with each other and traveled the northway side by side to each other. I'd look over at times and he would be right next to me, however as I approached 100, I sensed that I was going to be able to beat him. I was wrong, and we basically kept up with each other. However, it was great knowing that I couldn't be beaten. I was finally up against something in which was a challenge to me. I have raced many people, and have pretty much won everytime. After realizing that I was going 125 mph on the 65 mph northway, i braked and slowed down. The 350z kept going, and I somewhat giggled how he was now in the potential of getting pulled over. But he slowed down shortly after I did. We were in a pool of cars, and I remained at 70 mph for a few minutes. I don't know what he did after that. I just proceeded to go to Lake George. I'm not saying that one car is faster than the other is. I just thought I would share this since the individual is 17 with an M3 who is on the verge of going up against a car in which I have tested my car's capabilities with. To me, any car that can beat me from starting point is just faster than me, sometimes one should take the time to see the other important factors in which make up the car. The M3 is known to have many of these factors to make it a car in which is recognized by many to be a great car. Could it be the straight 6 under the hood, or many of the other well known characteristics, in which the M3 has, that makes up this car? Could the 350z have performed as well against an M3 on a track full of turns and other obstacles to overcome? Many operations may be performed to see which is the better car overall. I stand by my statement when I say that your car would outrun his car on a track, and not just a straightaway, there is more to a car than being able to go fast in a straight-line. |

| alright, update us. what happened? and something no one answer, the differential is the thing between the rear wheels that turns them. heres another idea. if the wheels on the 325 are stock (your sisters 325), put them on. lower the tire pressure. do this before the race, and see if it makes a difference. my money is on the m3. |

| Re: i'm 17 with a M3 here is what i have to say..... 97 M3. Let me guess, you were on the Northway, just after clifton park but before Lake George. I know the area. And I don't doubt you were stoned. I think everyone on the Northway heading to Lake George is somewhat in the same boat. Scary. I am from Watervliet. If you are 17 and drive an M3 I am guess you are either from Niskayuna, Shaker, or Shen. The only place I see kids in upstate with nice cars...wonder why? When I was 17 I owned a 1987 Cougar with rust and it stalled at every light. And you are smoking weed, driving fast, in a car you didn't buy. Greeeeeeeeeeat. ![]()

| Was out at the track about 4 months ago. A friend has his 350Z out there (touring edition..6speed). Just a few weeks old. We started at opposite ends of the track (ie he was half way through the track before I started). After about 4 or 5 laps I had reeled him. Later we were going to do some actually timing, but he ended up losing it in the twisties and smacked a wall, ending his racing for the day. I've been in the car since it was repaired and I think it has some issues. 1. The tires seem too narrow for the power is can output. 2. The gearing seems to only be strong in 1st and 2nd, after that is really seems to lose some torque/hp (not sure what the graph is though...) 3. It seems unbalanced in the turns. If you do race from a stop in a straight line, your taking away any advantages the M3 has over the 350Z. First, run your tank almost dry, then get some 100 OCTANE fuel and fill it only to a 1/4 tank. Or get some octane booster... Take everything out that you possible can, spare, mats, things in the glovebox, etc. If you can, grab some stickier tires and practice dropping the clutch in the mid/low 2k rpms. Dont burn your tires on the launch! |

| http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/sh...hreadid=139081 E36 M3 can easily take a 350Z... Have seen it many times, others have done it... close match stock-for-stock, with the M3 slightly ahead, modified M3 all the way... is this or has this happened already? There doesn't seem to be a wealth of updates...

| I think DTM Power has had enough of this thread. In deference to the stickied thread regarding the catastrophic loss off life during the California canyon run, I am moving this thing to the Recycle Bin. I just cannot bear the duplicitous nature of having one thread mourning a street racing death, with this theorhetical street racing thread existing just below it. Few things strike me as more wrong. So it is in James' name and memory that this discussion is now over. |
