Is this based on someone who does not hold a previous license and is applying for the first time?

| Lol. In the UK you can apply for a provisional license as soon as you turn 17. The next thing to do is to sit the Driving Theory Test, where you have to answer at least 30 out of 35 questions correctly based on The Highway Code. The test also involves a hazard perception element where you sit at a computer screen watching a car drive around from the drivers view and you click when you see a hazard developing, such as a kid running into the road. There are 10 scenarios you need to sit through, and a certain percentage score needs to be obtained. If you successfully pass, you can then apply to take your test. The test involves getting less than 15 minors and no majors, probably similar to what you have to do I suppose??? Since I passed I think another test has been introduced where you have to identify parts under the bonnet and know how to check oil levels, etc. Very simple - You can't fail! This happens before starting the driving part of the test. Anything else you would like to know? How is it different for you guys? You might have to wait a few years for some countries to respond. The recent threads page dates back to 2003!

| Hi Dan, for Germany: You have to be at least 18, but can start driving school with 17. You have to take a lot of therory lessions (don't know exactly how much). You also have to do a specific amount of driving lessons with your instructor, wich includes parking, "Autobahn" etc. To get your registration you have to do a therory test, and a practical driving test. If you fail, you can redo them (i think 3 times, after that you have to wait a few months). You also have to do a first aid training. And everyday i drive to work i think there must also be some way to win the license in the lottery, without ever having driven a car before.... Could be i forgot something. I'm tired. ![]() |

LOL!! This is exactly why I was asking... it is much too easy to get a license here in the states. I was curious what the Europeans had to go through. Each state in the US is slightly different. To my knowledge they all start with a learners permit which allows you to drive only with an adult of at least 21 years. You have to take a written test (VERY easy) to get a permit. You can't get a license until you are either a certain age or complete some form of drivers education class. There is only a driving test for the license; no written. It's really easy.... the hardest part for most people is parallel parking Most states will only grant what is called a graduated license to anyone under 18. A graduated license restricts your privileges for a period of time; first six months you can only have one passenger and can't drive after 9pm etc. Each state is slightly different. Some (one?) states allow you to get a permit as early as 14 years old Thanks for the info! |
