I wouldn't say "hands down" as it's all personal preference. Yes, the E39 is a great looking machine, but I still think the E34 is better looking. It's all about what pleases your eye. That's just my opinion.

They seem to get more "friendly" looking as they get redesigned. I'm into the "sinister", I'm going to suck you through my kidneys and spit you out my tailpipe, look of the E34 M5 when modded correctly. An E28 looks even more sinister when done right with Euro bumpers, ect.

I'm not saying this can't be done with an E39. I've seen it done quite well on a few examples, but there scarce. The advantage of the E39 is the angel eyes which do help with a sinister appearence.

This is also coming from a person who would take a tastefully modded E28 M5 over all of them. I guess I'm just into the old school lines. Again, it's all personal preference.

The E34 535 5spd is a great car!! Congrats!

that car should have the US Projectors
just get a Mr Jung Xenon kit if you are worried
or just get the Osram Silverstar lights for it

dont waste your money on euro projectors.

5ers are very difficult to not like.
I love a nice E12, Id kill for the one lap M5 with euro bits, Id commit genocide for an E34 M5 Wagon... but I wouldnt mind an E39 M5.

To me, the perfect car is the E34 M5 Wagon with the 3.8L S38

However Id like to make an E34 532i Wagon (525i Wagon, 5 spd conversion, S52 bottom end, S50 OBD1 bits in the head)

I wouldn't say an e34 is quite a classic yet. All parts are still very easy to find, including euro parts.

Best place that I have found for e34 parts is:

http://www.bmaautoparts.com/

Talk to Patrick Bright and he will set you up.

All the e34 guru's hang on the following board:

http://www.bimmernut.com/wwwboard/e34/

Here is by far the most comprehensive e34 info site on the net. It is put together by a fellow in Canada (Bruno) and the information contained is amazing. You can spend days on here.

Dude you'll probably have to drop some dough into maintenance type things right off the bat, so I wouldn't get too excited about mods yet unless you have money coming out of the hole Are you getting it pre-inspected?

Either way congrats

the only thing he should really look for are electrical gremlins
the engine should be compression checked and checked for Leakdown
if it comes back within tolerance, the engine will probably outlast the owner.
Ive seen M30s with over 500k miles on the original bits.

In my subjective opinion, if the front of the car has both horizontal and vertical grille slats with exposed headlamps and angular lines... its a 'classic BMW'
not classic as in old... just classic in styling.
the E34 was the last of the BMWs with that styling.
