| M5 vs.Maserati So, it's been years since I have posted on this site. I'm not even sure if this thread belongs here, but I had to share this story and naturally this would be the place to do just that. 2003 Imola Red M5 vs Maserati Gran Sport- I was driving to meet a friend of mine at World Gym in Rockaway NJ. I got off rt 287 and headed up rt 10 west. It was cold and my rear tires were having a problem gripping so I was going easy on the throttle. I pulled up to the first light by the Wyndham hotel and cracked my window to get in a little fresh air. My attention was instantly caught by what sounded like a super car reving up.... my first thought was Ferrari... I wasn't too far off, a Maserati Gran Sport was 3 cars ahead of me at the light. The light turned green and he took off. I was stuck behind a lovely chevy pick up. I hit the shoulder and caught up to him as fast as I could. I looked over to try and catch the drivers attention. It was hard to see in, the orange glow from the street lights made it almost impossible to see inside. The Maserati stayed in low gear for about 2500 feet... There was plenty of room ahead of us, but I couldn't get the maserati to tangle with me. I put the M5 in 2nd..chirped the tires and took off and imm. pulled off. Still...no response.... My turn was coming up so I put on my turn signal.... The second I hit the black lever, the Maserati exploded into low gear and took off. I forgot my turn existed and slammed the M5 into 2nd gear. I caught up right away but the maserati seemed to be a little faster. We were head to head up to about 140mph. We came across some traffic and slowed down to 90 or so.... I hit the shoulder and so did he.... we met back in the normal traffic lanes and persued. I knew if I pushed the M5 hard enough I could walk away from him. We slowed down to 40mph .... both cars are even..... he gets the jump... I make the mistake of going into 3rd.... he gets a car length on me... the distance is increasing...... I stay on the gas... the M5 gains ground and pulls hard through 3rd....I was about even with him and power shifted into 4th.. The m5 bounced off the rev limiter for half a second then continued to pull through 4th.... then 5th... then 6th.... I could see a light about 1/2 mile ahead so I hit the brakes. Before I did I gained about a 1 1/2 car length on the Maserati. The m5 was pretty much tapped out... I wasn't sure of the speed but I was deep into the RPM range in 6th gear. I took the next u-turn and began to back track to my orginal turn off. |

| I hate to say it but this kind of driving is what gives BMW owners a bad name. Sure there's the fun of seeing what your car will do but that kind of speed should be reserved for the track. Passing on the shoulder is just plain dumb and you're lucky that you didn't get yourself or someone else killed. 3 people were killed in Maryland yesterday because some douche in a Cadillac SRX tried passing on the shoulder, sideswiped someone and caused a 4 car pileup. The 3 people in the SRX ended up dead. Congrats on having an M5 but use it wisely.

| i dont want to sound like an idiot but if the traffic flow is okay or no cars around, i think its normal for an M5 driver to have some fun with a maserati. looks like the traffic flow was ok because he speaks about hitting 140mph. ofcourse our lives are number one priority behind the wheel but im sick of not being able to have fun with our cars. i live in australia and cops are pretty much everywhere that you can not speed at all. it comes to a point where you just want to gun it and have some fun. i guess thats what joey p did. 140mph sounds a bit too fast for the streets but what can you do when that 12 y old kid inside you wants to have some fun sounds fun to me. lucky no crashes.

| In my book, if they both had to pass cars by going on the shoulder, there's too much traffic. Admitedly, there's nothing like letting a performance machine like an M3 or M5 have it's head but not where there's risk to other people. I've briefly touched 130 in mine but that was with absolutely no traffic around. At this point, I limit a lot of my fun to clear on-ramps and off-ramps and roads where there's no one around. There's one stretch where I can wind the engine out to 8K, what a sound!
