how can i get started in some auto cross

look up your local bmw cca chapter and your local scca.

once you find a chapter (there are tons), its as easy as showing up and driving. you need an scca license but you can buy day licenses for like 10 bucks. if you are going to be racing a lot its worth becoming an scca member for 50 bucks plus chapter dues for like another 10. if you don't have a helmet than they should have spares for that. you just need tires that are in good shape and a car that isn't falling apart.

I never heard of needing SCCA licences for an autox.

I know for SCCA ProSolo, you need a ProSolo license after your 1st event.

ProSolo is kind of like a cross between drag racing and autox-there is a christmas tree/drag racing tree for the start and you actually race someone else on a mirrored course on the other side simultaneously.

If you are just starting, like mentioned above, look for your region's BMW Chapter. I have found that less intimidating and a great place to start and learn. Or for that matter any car specific club (like Porsche Club of America). They seem to be less competitive and more about learning.

i am not autocrossing under a bmw sanction. it is the snake river region of the scca. and you need a scca license to compete. i have never prosoloed and actually didn't know what prosolo was until you explained it, it sounds fun. but atleast where i have been autoxing you need a license.

instead of looking for a bmw chapter you could also look for an scca chapter near you.

why you need a license to do scca autoxs' is because they are scca pointed and you can compete at regionals and nationals.

That's interesting! I've autoxed with the Philly Chapter of the SCCA and my teammates autox with the DC Region and we never required SCCA licences. I guess maybe it's different in other regions.

Yeah, ProSolo is really cool-as close as you get to head to head racing with autox. One guy here (vjlax18-also my teammate) did it last year and loved it. One of the events is held here in MD at Fed Ex field. I think I am going to try my hand at it next year.

Also another guy I know (megatron on here and bf.c) does it a lot as well. On bf.c if you do a search, there are some videos of this year's event from DC as well as some of megatron's in-car vids.
