| My first autocross was in 97 and I have done dozens.
Here's what I recommend.
Autocross first, it will get you used to the "FOCUS" in 40-60 second burst. Any seasoned autocrosser will tell you that for that run nothing else is there but you, the car, the cones, the flag stations and two sets of laser beams. On the track you need that focus for 20-30 minutes at a clip. It is mentally exhausting so get a good night's sleep, you'll need it.
Autocross will also teach you to "Tuck it back under" or catch a slide, back out of understeer and steer with the gas at a safe controlled setting under the watchful eye of an instructor. Those same skills apply on the street, track, autocross, heck even snow.
Your first event, go to registration in the morning and ask for an instructor. They will holler someone's name and you will have someone to walk you through your first day, get you through that sea of cones and give you the bug for autocrossing. 99.9% of SCCA, BMWCCA,PCA Autocross instructors are cool people.
From there the sky's the limit.
Always ask the instructors for rides, they are the best part. It's all about the control......
Take an instructor whenever possible, the learning curve is steep but short in the begining.
Have fun,
