Alright. that's it, all you guys are talking about overfilling oil is bad well heres my life story. I run 8 quarts of oil when going to the track and when driving around daily. My motor runs very strong and never had a problem. Ur going to need to run with 8 quarts of oil on ur track day. i did one drift event with 7 and my engine burned 2 quarts during the event and the lifters were ticking all the way home. with 8 and 3 spare qt's i have no lifter tick whatsoever. well except for the oil consumption but 1 qt every 400 miles isn't excessive at all says bmw, they say it's my driving. now they say it's my oil weight. whats next? 10w60 isn't thick enough. they will probably say put gear lube in now. lol.

8 qt? wow thats alot, you might be getting froth in the oil pan.

7 should be fine. Try running 15w50, I run in in my race car and have 0 oil consumption.

Have you done a compression/leak down test on the motor?

Ummmm... No. [sarcasm]I think just a few of us have said that some motors need extra oil[/sarcasm]... Seriously, do more searching, you'll find that some motors - like the S14 (I think) will develop more oil pressure when you have a larger oil volume in the engine, and blow out the main shaft seal when you add too much oil. Others like the M50 family and derivatives (like in your car) have a constant pressure that is independent of oil volume in the system... Now you are only talking about adding enough oil to keep your oil sump pickup submerged at all times and that is a very different story.

Check your rings, I have a low mileage unmolested copy of the us flavor of the M3 and don't have anything CLOSE to the oil consumption issues you are describing - while autoXing etc etc. And um.... Don't use Mobile 1.

I need to find a website that can explain it a bunch better than I ever could, but there are a few things about it that are bad. First, it doesn't hold up to high pressure high speed shearing tests like some other synthetics do. Also, I've talked with a number of guys who feel that it runs "thin" for it's given grade, so M1 5w30 is thinner than other 5w30's on the market, etc etc... The result of that is that (especially on cars with boost) more gets by the rings and you burn a lot more of it. burning 1qt or more of mobile 1 for 1000 miles is something I've heard a lot of people with different cars (STi's, RSX's, M3's, etc) complain about.

There is another site I can't find right now, but as a primer, this site isn't bad:

I find that if I overfill my car with oil, it leaks out the rear main seal under pressure. I just check the level after every session. My car burns about 1 qt. every 300 track miles.

I dont know about beemers -never looked at the inside of my sump, but with my WRX on the track you need to run a baffeled sump or you have problems with heavy track driving -esp when using slicks or very good R compound tyres. (The oil in the rex tends to pool on one side of the motor in long corners, or very hard corners.)

I have had surge a few times in the M3 on the track.

Over filling is not the answer. Remember with most cars the oil system was never designed for high g track driving.

And the right oil for your motor/application is always important.

Just my two cents

Yeah, on M3 LTW or M3 GT's you have a dual pickup and an oil pan that is designed to fix the oil starvation issue... And yes, with out that expensive (and in my case, not SCCA stock class legal) option you are left with work arounds, like adding extra oil... as you said, a baffle in the oil pan is a better solution, still waiting on clarification on class legality... but for my purposes so far, the extra qt. of oil trick has done the job to prevent oil starvation or foaming, so while it isn't the answer, it does work.

Sorry didnt read the bit about regs. In that case if you cant make changes then the extra oil will have to do.

Surely they wouldnt know if you baffeled a standard sump and threw it on? -Not that I suggest you cheat but as far as protecting an expensive motor goes...

There cant be any performance increase? So not being familure with the series you run in I cant see why they would not allow you to run a baffeled sump.

Yeah, I know... I think even in stock classes the rules should allow for safety of the vehicle as well as safety for the driver... Things that can prevent major damage with out providing performance gains are the type of thing I'd like to see allowed... but it's a can of worms... I can just see some strange situation where the EVO MR's are prooven after a few years to have such a high level of boost from the factory that they start blowing up engines, so suddenly under that vehicle safety clause they start running custom boost controllers and just like that you have a car with performance equipment snuck in for safety reasons... Since I have a working solution, I'm not going to push the issue... But yeah, I sometimes wonder how many people have those TMS kits welded into their oil pans.
