About to buy an Auto-X Helmet...

Well, I'm about to delve into the realm of SCCA Solo 2 and am about to purchase a helmet. I've narrowed it down to a few choices by Bell and G-Force but would like some advice...

1. Bell Mag IV - http://www.saferacer.com/bellmag4.html : Open face, should cool well and be rather light as well. SA2000 approved. Right around $210.00. Not bad

2. G-Force Hybrid - http://www.saferacer.com/gfforcehybrid.html : Open face (no clear mask). Not as light as the Mag IV I'm sure, but I like the hooded design on it. Also just a little cheaper ($200) and of course it's SA2000 approved.

3. Bell Pyrotech - http://www.thebellstore.com/Auto/pyrotect.html : Open or closed face. Similar as above.

So, what do you all use? Are open face helmets that much lighter than the closed? Will the open face suffice when I start road courses at places like Mid-Ohio or down at Road Atlanta?

lol.. i just use my motorcycle helmet, I wouldnt worry about going all out for an autoX helmet though



as long as the visor comes down (front doesnt stay open) thats better because you always leave the windows open during the autoX and you dont want dust or bugs flying into your face

Most of the places I talk to say just to make sure to have an SA2000 approved helmet...the rest is up to personal preference. Though now that you bring it up, the visor thing is a VERY good point!

I personally prefer an open faced helmet.

Im in the same situation and I'm thinking of a Shoei Tz1 or an Arai but the Arai's are really expensive even with the employee discount my friend is getting for me.

I'm leaning towards the hybrid for when I go up to Road Atlanta (even if I don't drive, it'll be nice to have the extra helmet protection with open face for good breathing.
