Also in the market...

Im thinking of getting a Mini S
Wondering about a few things...

Insurance, whether it be a 03 or 04 Cooper S how much you think insurance should be (18 w/ good record)

Do they have any known problems/recalls or things that bother you that might erk me too?

How is the speed/acceleration/handling?

They seem like awesome cars, something i can drive around everyday. I've done some reading on consumer reports, not enough yet, but i just want to get an idea from MINI drivers on DTM, a place i trust

Thanks in advance

My gf is in the market for a cooper right now... Just a quick question... is the JCW package worth the extra few grand? or should she save that money for aftermarket performance stuff and it'll yield more hp/trq then the JCW package can provide?

If you are a warranty whore, I'd go with the JCW, and be happy with that. If not, skip the JCW all together, and you'll get the equal gains with $1,200. Which leaves room for whatever else you want for your MINI.

First you should check that your insurance even knows about the MINIs existence...mine was about to charge for an M Coupe (yikes!).

Second of all, the MINI is nothing short of the best performing FWD car money can buy in terms of handling and cornering. I have personally experienced manhandling SVTs and hopped up Civics on many a curvy road. There are faster cars out there for cheaper but none are as balanced in all performance sectors IMO as the Cooper S. Anyone with enough engine mods can drag race, but few can tackle a REAL road as well as a MINI. And no other car in its price range can claim it has the rear suspension from a 3-series or any other BMW components like DSC, CBC, Electrohydraulic steering and so forth.

The JCW package is great if you care about the warranty, and really that + the name recognition is what you're paying the extra cash for with the Works package. The great thin about the MCS (MINI Cooper S for those who aren't familiar with MINI-talk) is that you can easily get rid of some of its bad traits..ie, sway bar to eliminate heavy understeer, stickier tires to aid acceleration and handling, and an intake+pulley overhaul to aid breathing and get the car close to the 200 hp range.

As far as issues/recalls go, I wouldn't trust Consumer Reports...I personally haven't had any problems with my car (knock on wood) and I've owned it for a year now.

All in all, it's been an awesome year...this car has been nothing short of amazing. Plus, like my friend said, I have never had people stop in the middle of the street while they were driving to stare at my Corolla.
