| E39 death @ 124,000 miles? My E39 523i has done 124,000 miles (200,000km's) and I am having major issues with the gearbox. It keeps going into limp home mode and when I put my foot down it has pretty bad slippage. I have flushed the oil out and topped it back up twice already. The stuff that come out was pretty black, same as I what I seen in other threads when others did it with their transmissions. The codes were read and it said something about the switching of the box, I forgot exactly what it said because I was looking over the shoulder of the mechanic who said it was screwed, and my motor was screwed.... and oh, by chance he had a used motor and gearbox there to put in! The engine compression tests 180psi across all cylinders, and it looks like valve stem seals are gone too. I am in Australia without the nikasil problem, however an alloy block will show it's problems in time. Now I have to either replace the gearbox, or service it... or swap engine and gearbox for something bigger and badder. I am eyeing off a M3 236kW 3.2L and six speed, however my other option may be for a manual box, and programmable engine management. Any advice? I will spend the whole weekend on google working out what to do =( |

| Possible Fixes - Electrical System – Battery, Terminals, Alternator Internal Harness… Transmission Control Module MAP sensor (coolant temperature attached to the thermostat) Traction control Resistor wiring Front Airbag connection (Replaced wheel – but was working for a while ok with it) I'll test the electrical system in the morning. The battery is under a month old, and top spec N70Z "Century Extra Heavy Duty". The ground issue, and after reading about others' problems with the battery is starting to make me wonder. However I'll figure out what the neutral sender switch is, and how it affects the car when it's not in neutral lol and examine it, wherever it may be.
