| e39 m5 questions... I have a few questions for owners of the e39 M5. I want to buy one and wanted to get some more info on them. 1. What are things I should look out for when buying? 2. What is the lifetime (in miles) roughly before things will start to break, or is it built very well and will last well over 100K miles? 3. What is the average fuel consumption for regular driving? City/Highway? I hear they are pretty bad for gas. 4. Is it drivable at all in the winter? I live in Calgary and we tent to get a fair amount of snow every winter, if I put on some winter tires will it handle ok or is there too much power for that? 5. How often does the clutch go? How much to replace it roughly? 6. What year should I look at buying, I know some cosmetic stuff was done to them I believe after 2001? 7. What packages were available for them? If I'm buying one should I get it with a certain package (premium, luxury or what not)? I know its a lot of info but I want to make sure I know as much as I can before I invest in one. If you have anything else to add that I would need to know please feel free to add. Thanks in advance! |

| 1. Newer vintage, 2002, 2003, and one properly taken care of by it's owner(s). 2. The drivetrain is solid for a long time, except for potential carbon buildup. Search on m5board for many threads on carbon buildup. 3. Pretty close to the EPA 13/21, although I get a little better on the highway. 4. Ask other Canadians on m5board, but I think they'll say yes. 5. Totally depends on how you drive it. OEM clutches last 25-80k miles. Do NOT go with cheaper aftermarket clutches/flywheels! (speaking from experience). It's Dinan or OEM or nothing. 6. I would not look for anything older than 2002. 7. Aside from extended leather and cold weather package I think they were all maxed out with options from the factory. Do NOT go cheap with mods, especially powertrain mods. The M5 is a very expensive car to fix, and most aftermarket products are not made to BMW's standards. Especially stay away from body kits! |
