Warming up problem

new to this but when its cold out my car starts up fine but after a couple minutes the rpm's start jumping up and down then falls on its face if i dont keep it reved at around 1500 rpm's until the temp gauge almost fully warmed up. but when warmed up the car drives and acts fine, and no codes show up on the computer or anything. i would appreciate any help cause the shop i go to doesnt have any idea. thanks

Funny story, I have the same year and model and I have the same problem when it's cold outside. I have even had it stall while the engine is cold, but this doesn't usually happen unless it's super cold outside. It did it when it was brand new and continues to do it to this day. I've replaced fuel injectors, spark plugs, coils, fuel lines, and fuel filters and it still does it. Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it too much, I don't anymore. Just don't let it sit in your driveway and let it idle, it's not good for any car. Just drive it slowly until its warmed up.

This issue is discussed in greater detail. It's not a huge problem but if you're seriously worried about it read this thread on BMW Board

thanks i was just wondering what it could have been cause i just thought i was kinda weird my mechanic had no idea

It is an unusual problem, but it seems to be fairly common with the M52TU motor. In my books it is a minor problem since it doesn't throw back error codes or trigger a check engine light.
