e39 540i bmw HEAD GASKET.......

hey everyone, i have a 98 540i... looks like i got a bad head gasket...Can anyone tell me more about the problem? i know its expensive to fix..5k about...anyways just wondering what how long i can go not fixing it and stuff like that, just general info about the problem, thanks!
