blacktype: well, since the M20's are probably one of the cheapest, you can give it a try. if you break it, just put in another.

the next best bet would be the M30 transmission. stronger and also highly available from where you are i assume?

do it. i'm sure you'll love it

Hi 6piston,
I am preparing to swap my 750iL's M70 into a project car and am experienced enough to know I need to do more research and planning before I turn working cars into non-running projects. I am very interested in what manual throttle bodies you used and if you think you would go back at some point. I'd like to avoid the added complexity of drive-by-wire from the gas pedal to the related computer and wiring harness. Also, when you still had the manual trans in, is it grossly oversimplifying to say you simply removed the auto with all the related harness/computer and engine still ran? Or was there much engine/transmission interconnection electronically that needed to be modified? Thank you for pioneering the hard stuff and being willing to share!

Sweet project,
Got a mate looking at doing a similar one with his E32 in the coming months.

I don't envy the poor chap doing your spark plug swaps though :| lol

hmm

okay, the thing with the previous swap was, it was done with minimal usage of the parts from the 750i. only the engine control units were retained. everything else was wired to the M20's stock wiring. the manual throttles worked by connecting an auxiliary throttle position sensor to the throttles. the guys managed find and replaced the tps signal to the ecu. manual throttles are great an i plan to go that route in the future or when the drive by wire goes.

as for the manual M20 transmission, naturally, it runs fine just because there were minimal 750i left in there to create any hassle

but i did hear that it's quite easy to swap the 750i's transmission to a manual with minimum fuss. i have to get back to you on that. i have to get that piece of information from the guy at the shop. he assured me that it'll be easy

At the other end of the spectrum

Your V12 E34 amazes me. Did BMW make one or is it all your conversion? I am so far at the other end of the spectrum I can’t imagine having a lot of power. My daily driver is a 520i with 150 hp and 150 ft/lbs of torque. If I don’t rev it to 4500 or 5000 rpm I get tapped in the rear between first and second gear. Fortunately the motor is smooth at that rpm but I yearn for torque. Thanks for showing your car.
