Looking to buy a 5 series, gen advice?

Im looking for a 5 Series 5 or 6 speed between the years of 1998-2000 I would prefer to have a inline 6 but I would also enjoy the wrath of the V8. I have worked on plenty of the 6 cyls and not much of the v8's. How reliable and are there any known issues? ie. head gaskets or any other big fixes? Any advice would be appreciated.

BUY mine!

540i 6 speed, every option avaialable in 97
GPS, TV module, electric sunshade, heated steering wheel, heated seats etc. etc.

Super Sprint exhaust
HID headlights
AFE Cold air intake
Short Shift kit

Great running car VERY Clean! 140k mi.

The V8s are almost as 'reliable' as the sixes, but not fun to work on. BUT given the years you want to buy, there is nothing in six cylinder format that would perform like the 540, so I would say V8 it is.

commonly the i6's and the v8's have one major issue...the cooling system...aside from that you might want to check out this list...

Now...the car has the m52 and m52tu engines 98 and below has the m52 and 99 and up has the m52tu...both engines are workhorses for BMW...m52 is common also with the e36 m3...but uhm of course the m engine was bored out =)...
