| I know this is the Internet, but please write in sentences. It gives me a headache trying to decipher what you are attempting to say. I'll make you a deal: if you re-write your post with proper grammar I will thoroughly answer every question.

| I'll chime in on a couple... HID's and cheap shouldn't be in the same sentence. Its more expensive. See if you can get an all in one package deal through ebay on the lights including bulbs. Regarding the flashlight. Its probably the battery. Open it up and take it to radio shack or somewhere and see if you can replace it, or look for a new one on, again ebay. Cheapest bang for the buck? I have a V8, so its a little harder for my car, but I would assume chip is the most bang for the buck. Air filter setup, exhaust, maybe underdrive pulley's. Lop off your Cat ( I dont endorse that) I have also heard of changing out the mass air for a 540i unit. The Search button on yahoo with the words "cheap bmw upgrades" should net you a wealth of information. Then there is always NOS. Better be careful with that and your engine though.Bavauto, BMP, Turner, in your case, Ebay probably. Nothing is really "cheap" on BMW's.

| thank you for the info So H.I.D's aren't cheap, but how much are they around? what brand air filter to get ? or are you talking about a cold air kit or somthing of that sort. what would changing out the mass air unit do ? im staying away from nitrous. i want constant power....superchargers and tubos are outa the budget. the flashlight is a rechargable unit meaning no batteries needed lol i know nothing about these bmw's...... |

Air filter can be either a drop-in filter that fits in the stock airbox, or an aftermarket intake such as: East Coast Induction System :: Intake Systems :: E39 5 Series Intake System (97-00) 528 Changing the mass air will allow for more air to enter the engine and is typically calibrated with engine reprogramming. Not many companies make this part for BMW's - mine is from Dinan, but for the six cylinder motors you should be able to use an HFM from a 540 as they come stock with larger HFMs. The flashlight is rechargeable, but since the vehicles are older, the battery may not be holding its charge. These batteries are soldered in, and require a little surgery to replace.

| Just beat me to the bunch, James. I wasnt sure if I was going to answer the flashlight thing. I have heard the Mass air works great with the reprogramming, but a custom tune may cost a little.

| what is e39? thanks for the help with the flash light. i dont know if that intake system would work for me,ive got a 535i 1989 and not a 97-00 how much is this mass air flow sensor. where could i get it? wouldnt just disconecting the batt for aboput 20mins make the comp reprogram its self? |

| E39 refers to the BMW Chassis code. The engine in the '89 535i is known as an M30 - which refers to the BMW engine code. When you are searching for engine modifications, you should search for M30 mods, as this engine was used in numerous other BMWs as well. As far as intakes go, the one made by Turbo Charging Dynamics looks pretty good. I would search out a used one in good condition and save yourself some money over the $225.00 retail price: ![]() I'll have to do some more search regarding swapping out the mass air-flow on your vehicle. Since it's an OBD1 vehicle, you are in luck. You will be able to purchase a chip instead of getting more expensive engine reprogramming. Conforti makes excellent OBD1 chips, and you can read the details here: M30 Chip Just like the Intake, I would search for a used version. Typically there are different ECU models for each vehicle, and you have to make sure yours matches the one of the vehicle you are buying it from.

| The best place to get the MAF mod is from Miller Performance Their is only $500 compared to the rest which are closer to $1k. This generally give you about 10-15hp and I believe it includes a chip. Theirs is actually cheaper than the used one I'm selling. (Although mine allows you to adjust the air/fuel mixture on the fly). The drop in filter is the cheapest, but doesn't do much(5hp). Same with the CAI. The stock intake sits next to the exhaust manifold, so unless you have a really good heat sheild, it actually causes a lose in power. Good luck finding a used one, I rarely see any. Exhaust mods only yeild a better sound. My car lost power when I went to the exhaust/intake combo, until I got a chip. The engine needs back pressure to create its torque and without it, its a slug. A chip helps a lot, but you'll have to use 91+ octane gas, all the time. EAT/D'Silva and Jim Comforti make the best M30 chips. It takes about 20minutes to pull the old chip and install the new one, if you know what your doing. Nothing's cheap on a BMW for mods. The best bet for used E34 parts is bimmer.info or bimmerforums.com (the 2 biggest E34 online groups) MAF-$500 Intake-$200 Chip-$150 used to $250 new Exhaust $700 Realistically, if you engine is in good shape, the next cheapest thing for power is a stage 1 turbo. THe best bang for the dollar. I had a streetable M30 built as NA tune and only got 210rwhp (160-170rwhp stock) for over $6000 spent. Stage 1 turbo will give you 250rwhp easily.

| Stage 1 non-intercooled = $3850 Stage 2 intercooled = $5500 Although you always need to figure on more than that to get the job done. Its never cheap, but totally worth it. TCD The M30 has a low 9:1 compression ratio, so you can boost it a good deal before needing an intercooler. FI is a great upgrade for this engine and really makes the car come alive.
