WTB: 540i 6 speed 97-03 near WA state

anyone? seriously... what happened to DTM??? any things i should know before stepping into the E39???

Since I have purchased my used 97 540/6 the following items needed attention:

Power Steering Rack $$$
Valve Cover Gasket
Rear Wheel Bearings
Brakes
Clutch replacement
Catalytic Converters

I purchased my 540 with 100k miles and it currently has around 120k. The money I saved by picking up a (very) used car was immediately put back into maintenance. The previous owner was very diligent about properly maintaining the vehicle and I still had service bills of around 6-7k.

My advice: buy a car that has either had a lot of major items already replaced, or find an extended warranty. Keep in mind that 540 maintenance is noticeably lower than E39 M5, so in a way we have it easy.
