E39 Should I buy?

Guys,

Looking to pick up a E39 1997 523i model.Current milege is at 180K.

any advise on the maintainence or things to look out for for this model?

Radiator and the cooling system in general are always trouble spots for the six-cylinder vehicles from that time period.

Rust shouldn't be an issue, but look for the VIN numbers on each of the panels - if you see a DOT-R sticker (or the Malaysian equivalent), then that panel has been replaced.

im looking at a 99' 540i for $9800 should i go for it or does it sound to good to be true, description looks fine but he could just be trying to sell???

Any more details on the car? Be sure to ask for full service history records and look for the VIN on every body panel.

That doesn't really tell us too much. Automatic 540s are still a great car to drive. I guess you won't know until you drive/inspect it for yourself if you are going to like it.

First check the HYDRO STEERING BOX,its a chronic problem in E39.
