Your transmission is slipping. Probably the first and 2nd gear. If the rpms go up but the speedometer doesnt, then your auto tranny is slipping. It also happens with manual when the clutch is worn out. The problem will be the price though because everything is sealed on an automatic transmission so your going to have to get it done professionally. I had the exact same problem with one of my cars, a volkswagon passat, but still, same shit. E-mail me or pm if you need help finding someone that can help you. good luck ![]()

where are you located? I know some people around the Los Angeles area that do tanny work dirt cheap. If you aint around here....i would highly suggest not going to a bmw dealership. see if you can do it yourself first, if you want, then try to find a professional that will do it. and they wouldnt replace first and 2nd gear. they would rebuild the whole tranny. it doesnt miss shift does it?

shit, range......anywhere from $500 to $2500 depending on what need to be done. If they rebuild it will be cheaper but the problem may reaccure. I personally would just replace it with a 6 speed. IF they tell you that you should just replace it, look into a 6 speed. i think the 540 had a 6 speed option right? i hate auto, period. Also try to replace the tranny oil and then manual shift it....from first gear to 3rd. I mean i dont know what gears your feeling this "slip" in, but its usually 2nd gear. ill look around to see if i can find a 6 speed for you.
