Auto to 5spd?

Dose anyone do this? is it costly? I drive my cars a little hard but i am calming down so i am in the air on which one to get. So if i get a auto and kick myself for it is a manual an easy cost effective. I am looking to buy a 540i. I dont have a pref as to what year to get. What years should i stay away from if any, and what major maintnance is needed at what milage.

Just get a stick, it'll cost you less in the end. You won't have to do a swap that very few people do on five series. Most swaps are done on 3-series.

5 Spd. + 540 = FUN

I'm sure I could be wrong, but I thought the E34 540 was a 5spd, and the E39 was the 6spd.... Although trentj did not specify which model, I must admit that I am not too knowledgeable of the newer 5 series other than E28s....sorry

my dad had an e34 540 with a 6spd

...but the E34 M5 was a 5spd.....correct? (I've driven a few of them)
