Not very hard to maintain. Parts are pretty much readily available, some are expensive. Engine rebuilds cost over ten grand, though. I like the fack that there is plenty of room to work throughout the car and you can identify everything easily (no plastic shrouds hiding everything). I think it would be a great car for your son to learn on because of this. My 6 year old daughter gets on a stepstool and points to things and I tell her what they do. I couldn't do that with my 96 M3.

The ///M535i was an ///M appointed regular 5er. It had the single cam M30 3.5L engine. The E28 ///M5 was a full through and through ///M car. dual cammed S38/M88 3.6L. Suspension tweaks, the works and wasnt available in auto as the ///M535i was. Im sure theres more but thats the skinny of it.
