e39 540I SIDESKIRT EXHAUST.....?

I just got my hand on a super clean 97 540i, 6 spd, dinan stage 2 suspension, shortshift, euro spec'd tail/headlamps. I want to throw sideskirt exhaust on this to let it roar a little bit, fulfill its potential, anyone done it or know what im in for, i want to run without cat, straight out the sidess, spit a few flames son the shifts, let me know if anyone has any suggestions

Are u kidding around? No cat and a side exit on a 540i? Its gonna be rediculously loud. What ur saying is u want a straight pipe. U gotta check with a local police station or RMV about the side exit. I know here in mass. the side exit must be a certain distance behind the last row of seats. U cant do that to a 540i here. Legally i mean. I doubt a cop would pull u for it. But, the no cat thing. First ur gonna make urself go def with that V8 running straights and second u'll nvr pass emissions with that bitch. You sound like someone u isnt even old enough to hav their license yet.

we dont have any emissions tests for inspection, the only thing is that its not coming out past back of cab, it only needs to pass visual, so i can just gut and run pipe through cat for visual inspection, i work at dealership so inspection is no problem. Anyone heard one of these engines running w/out cat/muffler?? is this in fact tooo loud to withstand

I dunno about 5 series but i know sum guys with 3 series who get annoyed by it. Personally i would luv a straight on mine because i luv listening to the motor and wouldnt care if it was obnoxiously loud.

yeah, im not too worried about the noise, i personally want to hear that engine run wide open, its more a matter of fabrication at this point and if anyone has done this and has suggestions

Yeah I heard that in places in Virginia dont have emissions, damn youre lucky. Hello from the other side of the spectrum. Good luck and post pics, that V8s gonna be unbelievably loud, but Im like sjpgoalie, I dont get annoyed by shit like that, when I drive my ///m3, I dont even ever have the radio on cuz I just listen to the engine aqs my soundtrack. No joke. Im a nut.

i usually dont drive with the radio on taht much either unless i am a little tired. i always drive faster when its off. ppl definitely think im a nut also lol

You know the difference between no muffler and a high flow muffler is problem no HP at all. I mean dropping your cat and running a wicked muffler to side exhaust would sound great but Jesus no muffler just straight pipes. I got a idea, how about you put some glasspacks and a gun rack on your car.

We have high performance german sports cars, not american muscle cars. I mean, just today i took off the plenum on my m5 and took off velocity stacks to expose the throttle bodies, just to hear the engine. It sounded nice, for a few minutes until i realized my car is a german supercar, not an american musclecar.

Lots of European Touring Cars past and present (MANY BMW's included over the years 3.5 CSL, E30 ///M3, E46 ///M3 GTR) have had side exhausts. The E30 ///M3 did in some racing series.
