| A turbo ZX was slower than the 535i? For $6500 american you should be able to afford a good condition E28, finding one is the trick, I doubt any 20 Y.O daily driver cars are in "perfect" condition...(collectors vehicles excepted). Have you considered a (E23 I think) 745li also? the turbo M30 has a bit of potential if you want an E28-like chassis as well as some speed. |

| Good luck finding one. Youll pay far more then 6.5K for a decent worth-it model. Id love to get a nice 535is, those cars are bulletproof and are decently quick and have lots of potential through chipping, and getting rid of that restrictive POS AFM and getting an MAF on that puppy. Love the aesthetics of the car, and its not bank breaker like the E28 ///M5. I assume you coudl get a pretty damn nice one for 6.5K. Id check the Roundel (BMWCCA Magazine) for ones, there you know it was cared for by somewhat of an enthusiast and you know theyll be prepared for fellow enthusiasts to come around looking at the car. I bought my ///M3 off there in 2001. Good luck and post pics!! Look for a Royal-blau metallic one, DROOOL!! Plus all you gotta do is some bumper tuck, shadowline it, lower it, put some E39 sport rims and smoke the rear taillight surrounds and the car will be tits. Simple old-school-bimmer modding tricks that are affordable and give your baby an updated fresh look. Theres others too. Like E28s can use the smoked/clear front turn signals that they sell for the E30s. *wink*

BTW ..would you know if a new air filter or something would alter the huge induction noise I get much? On acceleration it sounds llike my car is inhaling the road, a bit intimidating. |

| There was quite a good discussion on bigcoupe.com about changing the AFM to a MAF on the M30 a while ago. Sounds like a good mod, one that I'm thinking about for my 6er. The thread is here http://bigcoupe.com/phpBB2/viewtopic...&highlight=maf Cheers, Iain.

| meh, im thinking the best thing to do power/bang for your buck, would be to run an aftermarket ECU, works out the same if not cheaper and then u can run map ie nothing b4 the throttle body, correct me if im wrong... im looking to do this later this year and run "link"

| There was once an E28 in my family, but I never fully understood the styling of that car... perhaps it's past my time? I do like the Euro E28's like the white one above, but the US ones with the buggy bumpers never really did it for me.... How about an E34? E34 535i's aren't much different mechanically or dimensionally than an E28 (weigh about the same), are more refined, are arguably one of the best looking BMW's ever (I'm biased of course) and seems to me that you can buy nice E34's cheaply these days... plus they're about 5 years newer, making them a nicer daily driver... |

| Another good bang-for-buck mod is diff change. One of the few mods you can really feel on the ass-dyno. The e34 does have its flaws, just like the E36 was for the E30, it was product of the downsizing, cheaper material, globalization 90's. Build quality went down and it wasnt the tank that the E28 was, unfortunately. My father has a 540i 6-speed, and I LOVE the way it looks, its like a big E30. Still by all means an awesome car.

| Yeah, you're spot on. I had 2 E30's at different times in my life, loved the way they look, and have thought the same way about the E34... in my mind the proportions and lines are perfect: nice blend of old-world with the new... These old-world BMW's seem simple and sober on the surface, but once you start to live with them for awhile, you start noticing different planes and angles and some real complexity in their styling... not to mention the fact that the sight of 2 low-beam BMW lights blazing down the driveway or street has a certain defined look and attitude to it. I agree that the E34 is probably not built as well as the E28, but the things it adds and the way it looks and drives negate that in my opinion. I would drive my E34 another 10 years if that was financially feasbible... in fact, I might do that... |
