1995 540i with some weird vibration

Pleae help me......

I have a 1995 BMW 540i 6 speed manual with 133 000 km (aprox 80 000 miles). I get a weird vibration/ shaking when the car is under 2000 RPMs.The vibration is most intense exactly at 2000 RPM and between 500-1400 RPM. It is not really felt between 1500-2000 RPMs. I had my engine mounts replaced and spark plugs/boots changed. It occurs while ideling and driving. I had my clutch replaced and was advised to replace my flywheel...but I declined as my personal mechanic advised me it was not needed. I also notice some vibration in the clutch at higher RPM (3500 and above).

Could my vibration be related to my flywheel? Could it be a misfire? What else could it be???? I'd appreciate any ideas.

Thank you very much

First off I would see about running a simple computer diagnostic if possible. OBD1? Second have someone rev the engine to 2000rpm pop open the hood and try to locate the sound. It may be, although this is what I experience on older BMW's, that you need to get the valve's adj. Which isnt exactly a hard thing to do yourself if you have any mechanical exp., but can be quite costly at the dealer. Also may want to pick up a Bently Manual for your car and run down their checklist of possible things it could be. As far as flywheel goes I find it highly unlikely. And does it work both with clutch in and out? Anyways let me know.

same thing was happening to me last week

The problem I had was broken blades from the fan, I was missing 3, then because it was so off balance, 3 more blades broke causing my engine and car to shake really bad.

Another problem it could be is oil in the spark plug/boot, causing misfires.

thanks for your reply...my fan actually makes a lot of noise when the engine is not warm...I think it could be related to this...How much did it cost to repair and what did you tell your mechanic to check out? Thanks a lot

I think it cost me around $140.

all I did was bring the car down to him and told him that its vibrating, and shaking.

At first he thought it was oil in the spark plugs, but after i brought it home that day, it was shaking worse and making a real weird noise, I lost more blades...
So the day before I brought it back to him to have his Workers take it apart, I broke off all the blades on the fan and the car ran smooth...that was the problem, so he just replaced the fan.
