| XK8 to an M5 - how can i convince him? :) Hi, I drive a Cooper S Mini and have always been a bit of a bmw nut. Anyway, my dad has a jag XK8 which he has only had for 6 months and basically nicks my mums bmw 325i touring all the time as its "too big to park!". As a consiquence, the jag is sitting in the garage gathering dust - and my mum keeps nicking my Mini as shes affraid to use the jag. Quite honestly...its pissing me off! I said to him the other day that he should consider swapping the XK8 for something more practical, that he can use day to day. Previously, he has always had bmw's which have included E34's, E36's an E39 and an M3. He wants something that has plenty of power, doesnt look over the top and will have some luxuries. I think an M5 would suit him down to the ground and he could get a nice 2001/2002 as a direct swap for the jag. How am I going to convince him this is the right move? Cheers, |

| Take the Jag out of the garage. Give it a wash. Go to the BMW dealer in the Jag. Test drive an ///M5. Bring it home. Get your father to drive it. Mission Accomplished. Here is what some people have to say about the ///M5: "... the best and most consistently enjoyable sport sedan the world has ever known." Motor Trend, March 2000 "On the track, the M5 is hunkered down and grips the asphalt with confidence and composure. The instant-on electronic throttle response and the precise manual gearbox will bring a smile to any driver." Road and Track, March 2000 "For people who love cars, the M5 is quite simply the most desireable sedan in the world at any price. What more can we say?" Car and Driver, March 2000 "Without sounding like a broken record, this is the one car to beat, faster, sharper, not to mention safer, and more luxurious then anything on the market, the best sports sedan in the world then, the best sports sedan now, and maybe even forever." Motor Week "The new BMW M5 is simply the best." European Car, June 2000

| Tell him that (sorry, I know youre English) the Jag once it gets some miles on it will be in the shop or the dealer 3 days out of 5. Most English cars are crap, and BMW (especially the E39) is going through a nice period of their cars retaining value. E39 ///M5 is, IMO, the peak of ///M5 character. The new one has too many computers and gadgets and doesnt have a clutch pedal. ///M is beginning to really become aimed at another non-enthusiast crowd. Lets face it, us enthusiasts dont have the money to buy these cars, lol. Have him test drive it and thats all thats really needed. If that doesnt grab him, he doesnt belong in an ///M5. Good luck, man. It is the definition of sports sedan, a niche BMW invented and has been consistently held as the standard of which all others are measured. I hope I have helped. ![]()

| Hi guys - thanks for the response. The thing is he drove one before buying the XK8 - and it was great- but the one he drove was shabby and had a few flaws so I think it put a damper on it slightly. I will see what i can accomplish this weekend ![]() |

| go to m5board.com and have him read the posts. Most of the posts come from UK members. Cheers.

| hehe - well its all going well. I took him out at the weekend to look at a couple - 1 place we saw a great one for sale which was £21,000 on the internet - seemed a fair price for a 2000 V M5 with coms pack, 60k miles, fbmwsh - just serviced with new tyres. It also was in silverstone metallic which was a bonus. Anyway...we drive down there and its priced at £22,500 - £1500 more than the net price. When we questioned the price, he said that this was his 'forecourt price' - however he would sell it for £21,000. The car was nice but this put us off immediately - when you buy an expensive car you want to be certain the dealer is honest. Anyway - he didnt seem that interested in us and offered us a terrible price on the jag - £15,000 - which is £3000 under what it books for trade in (im in the car trade). What annoyed us was he didnt sit us down at all or even look at the jag properly - didnt even ask us what extra's it had. Not good. No test drive was offered either which is sometimes understandable - but we did ring him and tell him we were travelling 50 miles to see it. The jag is now up for sale privately but we have also seen a few others which we are in current negotiations with. Particularly nice is a Red 2000 M5 which we have seen - no comms pack, but its done 45k miles, fbmwsh + it has had the biggest service done and fresh tyres + MOT. seems like we have come a long way since this time last week ![]() |

| Looking good. Keep your chin up and don't rush it. Let the right car come to you instead of you chasing around. Private sale is what should get you top $$$. Best of luck!

| well just had a good offer - £18k trade in without the warranty - making it £19,250 -which is what its advertised for privately - its based on a car which is £23,000 - a 00/X facelift with 40k miles + com's pack - not bad... |

| Right - well a few developments since last post! The Jag is now sold! - he got cold feet a few weeks ago - but i then convinced him to sell it as he simply wasnt getting enough use out of it - sold it privately for a good figure. He is also very convinced about an M5 now as there is very little between an M5 and 530/540i on the used market - and hes always loved the M Cars. So next week we will track a car down ![]() |
