steering wheel controls don't wrok

i have a low mileage 98 528iA sport and the steering wheel controls(radio/cruise) don't work and my airbag light is on but it goes on and off like its a bad connection. does any body know what the problem coud be?

Their be a data / srs ring behind the steering wheel kinda works like a tape measure. Take your car to a local bmw independent shop, if it has a drivers air bag igniter fault, have them replace the part, I think it's about $125.00 doller part & the shop should charge 1-1.5 hr to fix it. good luck
