Eh I was never good at spelling....Bangle, Bengal....He still makes ugly stuff, I still dont get his "Flame surfacing" BS...Only good looking car he's made has been the new 6er. So in my book hes like 1 for 5, including the new 3er....So he makes good looking cars 20% if the time....Doesn't sound very BMW-like IHO... And whats this crap about the new M5 being SMG only, and I hear the M3 will be the same....SMG is a joke, I can't get it to shift smoothly. A true F1 paddle shift is directly linked to the transmission and clutch, the transmissions actually has mechanical gears in it, much like a regular manual transmission. The SMG is an automatic tranny that you flick a paddle to make shift gears, it may have a clutch, but I believe it has no gears inside of the transmission. Maybe if I were properly instructed on how to properly drive one smoothly, and feather the gas as I shift I'd be a little more open to it, but for now, SMG sucks in my book. And the new M5 has a V10 in it, name a good V10 motor....Viper's motors stink, but theyre powerful. I think this M5 is a huge miss...Line all the previous 3 M5s up, and you can see the lines evolve from one to the other. I mean you can almost see the first generation M5 in the 3rd generation M5 if you look hard enough. The ass end is different, but look at the front....Its all classic BMW up until now. I'm all for pushing the limits of design, technology, and being avant guard like BMW has always been. However, there is a limit to these I think. Real drivers will always want a manual transmission and clutch pedal. It doesnt matter whats faster, its psychological. SMG is like a Porsche Auto-Stick tranny, nobody will want one in 15 years....

Thanks for the pics! A nice series for sure.

I would agree with the sentiment that the newer Bangle styling sucks

Umm, just to let you know m3sedan97guy, there is a huge difference between an SMG and auto transmission. The SMG dosent have any loss of power compaired to the auto tranny, and for the engine, the technology is above all else, go read some articles about the high reving v10 BMW has put in this, its pretty amazing. Also, if you learn how to drive it properly, it is awesome.

The older ones are so much better looking, probably more dymanic as well.

The new M5 will be old soon too, in 10 years we'll know how successfull it is.

I agree. I love my E36. I hate the new body styles. I'm going to keep my car forever and just keep rebuilding it every 10 years.

Wrong. The SMG, just like the Magnetti-Marelli system that Ferrari uses, is a convential manual box, with constant-mesh gearsets, synchronizers, shift rings, forks, and rods--everything you find in your regular stick-shifted tranny. The clutch and shifting mechanism are just electrohydraulicly actuated, instead of being directly user-actuated. The advantage to this is faster shifts, no unnecessary clutch wear, perfect rev-matching up or down (and adjusted to driving conditions, no less) and the fact that the gears in the transmission can be arranged with no regard for a comprehensible shift pattern (this is the primary reason that the new M5 will be SMG-only.

A system like the Audi/Porsche Tiptronic is indeed and automatic transmission (with a torque converter and planetary gearsets) that can be driver shifted. SMG is based around a conventional manual transmission.

As opposed to the fake ones who have, apparently, infiltrated BMW M Division and most professional motorsport? You see, I think you are sorely mistaken here. In fact, I think it is those who cannot drive at all who dislike the notion of SMG. Of course, that includes you...

Quote:
I can't get it to shift smoothly
Can you do anything right? I mean, cannot you shift an "automatic" transmission smoothly? Honorable comrade, you are worthless.

All, I think this here leech of our glorious BMW community is the byproduct of a vociferous and refractory media, hellbent on disestablishing BMW's dominance in the sport/luxury class. Clearly, this impressionable minion and many others like him have jumped on a bandwagon of antibanglism. He only dislikes the M5 because he is supposed to. "Real" drivers don't use SMG; Bangle doesn't design in "BMW-like" fashion; I don't like flame surfacing; I don't like the trunk lid of the new seven. And the list of sorely fatigued, antibanglism cliche's goes on. Sadly, I believe that this poor soul is beyond the reach of salvation from his heinous ways. I hope the rest of you can look upon new BMW's with an objective eye and appreciate their offerings. The E60 M5 stands as both a technological masterpiece to be chased by its competitors and a beautiful car to be stared at as it hunts through traffic.

Wow i have a boner. Those are the sexiest pics i have ever seen. Every single one of those cars are beautiful. As much as i love the e30 m3 i think the e60 m5 is the prettiest M car ever made. I dont see what the e39 has in common with the e34 or e28. The e39 looks really different from them both.
The m5 is only in smg because the engine revs so high that it was designed for a 7 spd tranny, and there are no manual 7 speeds out now. I read somewhere in a mag that they might mate it to a manual in the future. As for now it sucks not being manual

In my opinion the new M5 looks like hell. Not bashing the performance or technology just, they could of designed something a bit less japanese looking.
