| well, Hi again ![]() Looks like this time I'll be staying. I'm 16, dont drive a BMW, but my dad does and he's lazy so Im his R&D team for some reason I cant get into any car specific forums, so I guess I'll just ask here. My dad currently has a 98 528i, but he wants to speed up and price down. my first idea was he could get an e36 m3, but I dont know if thats feasable. edmunds.com says he can sell his 528i for 20k, and get a 95 m3 for 14k, but edmunds has been known to be wrong in the past. Just want to get some correct prices. jsyk, the 528 is it absolutely IMMACULATE condition except for 1 coffe stain on one of the replacable rugs, 1 scuff mark on the back of the drivers seat ( damn little kids!) and some sort of discoloration on the black plastic on the drivers side door. besides that, its literally immaculate. anyways, Im not even sure if e36 m3 is the way to go. he is in the process of a divorce and wants to get a car he can spend time working on with me, as a hobby, but he cant afford for the car to be down for much longer than a weekend at a time. Thats why I also thought maybe we could get our hands on some other e36 3 series, and possibly do an engine swap to something more manly ( ) and I'm sure he can deal with not having a car for ONE week.Whats most important isnt that he goes as fast as possible for the least amount of money, but rather something that he can enjoy building and driving..... and he cant deal with a super harsh ride. anyways, thanks for the help, I remember from my last stint here that the BWM guys are a particularly intelligent and helpful group, so Im looking forward to getting away from the idjits in the nissan community ( zilvia peeps) |

| Hmm, the e36 M3 can be worked on; it can be tuned; but if you're looking for a project car with you and your father, perhaps you should look into an older car. Now I don't mean something from the late 80's like an e30. I'm talking about an OLD ass BMW. For instance, a 2002 is a great car. Many can be bought for less than five thousand, most less than two-and-a-half thousand. As a project car, this would be better for you and your father. For one, it's older. Old cars are simpler than their computer controlled counterparts of today. It would be easier to rebuild and work on an old car. However, that doesn't mean that tuning a new car isn't possible either. It is definitely more difficult as there are more complex parts and machinery. Secondly, you mentioned that you want a fast car. While it's obvious that the M3 gets the nod here, a fast car doesn't necessiate a funner (can never remember if that's a word) car. The 2002, though BMWCCA and SCCA, has MANY races to participate in. I am confident that racing a 2002 would be just as fufilling as racing an M3, if not more. The competition is stiff, and, should something go wrong, it would be far less costly to repair. I'm talking about crashing and technical malfunctions. You didn't say that you wanted to race, but that's something that you and your father can certaintly do together. And for less than five thousand dollars, you can go through a lot more tires than with an M, hehe.

also, I dont know his position on racing... I dont think he want to do too much, and Im pretty sure that all nighters at the drag track, autox, and the occasional track event will keep him satisfied. |
