| '97 M3 with higher milage On Saturday I'm going down to look at a '97 Techno Violet M3 with 82k miles on the clock. After I drive if, if i decide that this is the one for me (price limited to 17k, this car is going for 16,8) I will obviously have it inspected by a mechanic. However, the car is in White Plains, 2 to 2.5 hours south of where I live. The easiest thing for the owner to do would be to take it to BMW of White Plains. I'm assuming that a BMW dealership (in general) would do a thorough job on the car and would be able to see what components need replacing, and what others I can expect to replace soon. When my dad bought his Porsche, he had it inspected by a Porsche mechanic with a private shop. The guy put the car under all kinds of lights to check for paint work (accidents we weren't told about) and checked for stuff like engine/transmission problems. Would a dealership do some half-assed job as quickly as possible or would they as much knowledge and commitement as a private mechanic/specialist?
Finally, if I do get this car inspected, what kind of things should I specifically tell the mechanic to look at in a car with 82k miles? I've heard to check, water pump, radiator (leaks), rear shock mounts, and synchros, and I'm assuming that's common knowledge for the mechanic to go over. If anyone knows of other serious repairs the car might need with that kind of milage, it would be helpful as I most likely will have no budget for repairs.
