MTBE post effects

MTBE has been in our gas for a while now (at least in cali, dont know about other places??) well they plan to phase it out and put ethanol(?) (corn based $hit) in the gas instead..

coincidently this will raise gas prices by a little (gee of course that was expected)

but anyways i heard that once they take mtbe out completely and put other crap in there it will be very harmful to our engines. does anyone know about this or have any facts?

MTBE was a good thing. It keeps your rubber seals/gaskets fresher for longer.

However, some ridiculously small amount of it.. like... a DROP can pollute one gallon of water beyond recognition...

But ultimately, it's more important that us Californians preserve the natural habitats. (So that housing developers can buy it all up and build homes on top of it)

Most of the Unical 76 stations in my area alreayd have ethanol in their gas. I tired it last week, the motor felt down on power a wee bit, but other than that it was normal.

MTBE is horrible for the environment, I forget why, but I think it gets into ground water really easy and can cause birth defects and shit like that. Where as, ethonal is completely renewable, and supports farmers. On top of that ethonal is extremely good at raising octane levels. I used to run E85(85% ethonal) in my Ford Ranger 3.0L and it was rated between 103 and 115 octane(boost friendly ), unfortunatly it is extremly corrosive and e85 can only be run in certain vehicles (ford and chevy 3.0Ls among them) but once car makers start to take adjust to this it won't be a problem. Also, once it has more widespread use, the price will go down. So it will be cheaper , better for performance, renewable and more environmentally friendly...all around a good thing.
