BMW dethroned...M3 second place...M5 second place

In the latest issue of Car and Driver (May 2003) there are a few competative comparisions. I have been a subscriber to C and D for a long time and its not very often that BMW's M's are found in anything but first place. Well in the latest issue things arent looking so hot for BMW. And no its not MB but Audi. Both the M3 and M5 lose to Audi in the latest comparisions.

Heavyweights-

1st Place- Audi RS 6
2nd Place- BMW M5
3rd Place- Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG
4rth Place- Jaguar S-type R

Middleweights-

1st Place- Audi S4 Quattro
2nd Place- BMW M3
3rd Place- Mercedes-Benz C32 AMG

The usuall M3 defense about how much better it handles is not there in this case because the S4 beat it in the handling catagory. The only good thing i have to say in Defense of BMW is that the new S4 is a V8 and the M3 still beats it to sixty! All i have to say is BMW better step it up a bit in the upcoming years...

BMW always re-invents the line that which all cars aim for but fail at miserably. The E39 M5 is how old now? And the E46 M3 has been around since 2001. Also I hear that C&D has a bias towards AWD cars because they feel safer than RWD. Maybe they aren't used to RAW POWER!

It's pretty obvious from my perspective. BMW just makes automobiles that don't have the "poise", "refinement", and "smoothness" of Audi's.

Isn't the RS6 not available in the U.S.? If that's the case, then then it the Audi should not have been able to compete...

I think the new RS6 is avaiable in the US, but im not sure about that one, you make a good point. Now that i look at the article it says the S4 is a European-spec. Maybe that implies you cant get either Audi's in the states...?

Audi has been "following" in the footsteps of the other German automobile manufacturers for years. Just in recent years have they come to make up the Big Three of Germany.

I hope you realize I was joking. I just think it's funny how BMW could win most of the objective tests and still lose the comparo.

yea i guess C&D got jealous of bimmer...who can blame them but everyone here knows that bmw M is better than Audi S. all there reasoning for why its not is bullshit. and what the hell is up with the new s4...they just stuck the audi 4.2 v8 in it...its nothing special at all. im dissapointed like shit.!
BMW will ALLWAYS be BETTER!: thats a fact

someone please fix his grammar and delete the second post.

I was astouded by that test as well. I think it is evidence that automakers are beginning to step up. The E39 is on its way out and hopefully the E60 will make for a grand improvement. The M3 could use improvements. i havent driven either audi yet so we'll have to see. I know from driving the previous S4 it had better be a huge improvement.

wouldnt worry. bmw will have awd available across its line soon enough. the problem is the penalty in spinning those front wheels--- takes a V8 to match the M3's I6.....hopefully, next gen M3 will be all carbon fiber, all wheel drive, and V8. i will buy it. i will drive it hard.

i think people need to take a step back from their emotional attachment to BMW. I love them just as much as everyone else on this board but, that doesnt mean that someone else can't make a better car.
