Is it possible to buy an m3 2002 and take out its engine and put a E46 M5 2002 engine in the m3 2002. Would it fit? Has it been tryed?

I don't know whether you can put an E39 M5 engine into an E46 M3, but I know that Hartge put the M5 engine into a E46 330ci (http://www.bmwworld.com/tuners/hartge_h50.htm)

yes u can put an e39 M5 engine in any e46 if u got the doe for it...u also have to remember that u have to account for weight distribution, reinforcements, and shit like that will need to be done and adjusted in order for it to work properly...check out the Hartge 5.0, its the best example for your idea.
