For best results, stay at 17 or below, also, don't get less than a 40-series tire or you'll be obliterating your rims on rough streets. As for as offset is concerned on the e30 (nonM3/ix) you're going to want to stay around 25mm or less, otherwise you might experience some rubbing in the front. Go well over 25 and you may not be able to get the wheels on far enough to put the lugs on it or tighten them down all the way. The OEM manufacturer (BBS) recommends 22mm (positive offset).
If your e30 has ABS your rolling distance on all 4 tires has to be the same, otherwise your ABS will disengage and your dash indicator will come on. (Just in case you were thinking about larger wheels/tires in the rear.)
