i got in a similar accident w/ my m3. this dude in a truck backed straight into my front fender while i was stopped behind him.

he called his insurance company and said it was totally his fault... this was in march 2002... his insurance still haven't paid for the repairs yet... lucky mercury insurance kicks ass or else my car woulda been borked forever....

From Bob ///M3 on Bimmerforums:

Quote:
I had a highly modified '93 MR2-T pulling over 300 hp a few years ago. It was one of the most dangerous cars anyone can own! The suspension dynamics was absolutely terrible! It has an independent rear-end along with a mid-engine design, which does not help matters any. If the MR2 is a turbo model the raw power of even the stock turbo engine can set the car off-course very easily and since the suspension is so terrible it simply cannot be saved. And if you lift the throttle (getting off the turbo boost) it gets the car out of shape and it will "snap oversteer" in a micro-second because the engine goes from boost to no-boost so quickly...and along with the terribly designed independent rear suspension and its mid-engine weight characteristics. NOT GOOD!!!

If you ever see a MR2 at an Auto-X, the chances it will spin-out are better than 50%. It is an extremely dangerous car...but can be made to go fast as hell.

If you've never driven a mid-engine, independent suspension turbo-charged pocket rocket before you cannot understand what happened. It doesn't surprise me one bit that happened...

First off....Holy shit..

Second. What is said above is very true about MR2's but in this case it could have been saved quite easily. Here is my MR2 crash story...

My buddy had the fastest/cleanest MR2 around(Top Notch All Around) I see him coming up from way way back because you cant miss it(Brightest duel HID setup I have ever seen) Keep in mind this is in my M3 days. By the time he is coming up on me I was ready(2nd@45mph) I clutch in fast, raise it, and drop perching my tires and it's on. We are neck and neck, as I shift to 3rd I can hear is loud ass BOV release. He slowly starts pulling on me as I hit 4th. He cuts in front of me to apex the turn and starts braking. I begin to setup to pass him on the outside because I knew I could hold in the middle lane at 90(done it) but right then the conversation I had literally 1 hour earlier with my frind about MR2's changed my mind and I let off and merged behind him. Right then is when his car was going sideways faster then I could blink. He spun like a gyro up and over the center rock garden median and continued spinning into the oncoming traffic. Missing 2 cars by a hair somehow his car ended up spinning back over onto our side and almost hitting another car. His car stopped spinning and he was facing the right direction and gunned it from the scene and I followed suit. I followed him to his house(my neighbor) and we inspected the damage. His crazy ass custom bumper was shattered to nothing, his undercarriage was shredded, his 1 DAY OLD high$$ rims were bent, and his exhaust was torn to hell(You MR2 guys probably know the setup...Duel chrome muffler racing setup from that MR2 tuner in Jap) and I am sure his suspension was fuked. He talked to me about how much of a death trap the MR2 is and after fixing all the damage he sold it. He pretty much told me exactly what Bob said above. I loved MR2's but I dont think I will ever own one because of the danger. Thats just my $.02

GREAT Explinations about the MR2's suspension design. Heard it before on Club RSX...but nice to see we really have informed folk here as well.
