CA legislature passes new law concerning vehicle emissions

You guys here about the new vehicle emissions law CA just passed. It's going to dictated a lot of things in regards to how cars that are destined for CA dealerships, are going to be made. Automakers are claiming that state legislature is basically dictating how they can make cars.

grr. i hate it when the f'ning socialist bastards here in california, use pseudo science to justify making cars more and more inoperable. not only that they're also hypocrites, as shown by a study, most of CA lesgislature drivers SUVs anyway. remember how the first emissions laws rendered cars basically inoperable in 1973? i think they want to do it again. what i hate the most is when people who don't know sh*t about cars, or about environmental science tell me (in the end they are telling me what car I can't or can't buy) what to do, especially when they're often dead wrong.

i agree so much, about them sucking ass. the whole CARB thing is ridiculous. they wouldn't even give you a lost of equipment you must have on your car to make it SMOG legal, the whole visual inspection is utter crap -- if passes the chemical inspection, why should it still be bad?

In Minesotta, they cancelled the smog check, because the gain they would make by going after the violators would be actually smaller, then what they lose by the emissions of the cars idling lined up for the emissions testing.

And if you want a fuel efficient car in California, one that gets 49 mpg (VW TDI), well you can't get it. Why? Because its diesel, and only a few numbers of diesels may be sold in the US. So basically what will happen is we will get inoperable cars, as emissions and fuel consumption regulations will contract each other (the Honda hybrid for instance, isn't even a LEV (not just a ULEV) -- because the 3 cylinder engine is actually very dirty).

I didn't even know that was a possibility. Congrats on doing so. My hatred of CARB comes from the bad experiences of someone trying to make a propane-powered car street-legal (which passed the emissions test, but didn't pass visual. One of the reasons it didn't pass visual is because it didnt have a gas tank evaporator, which a propane car can't have at all (! And CARB refused to give the owner a list of parts needed to make the car smog legal). Not to mention all the problems my friends had with actual smog legal air intakes (CARB certified). I must imagine what people who import Euro spec BMWs, or JDM-spec Hondas, or Nissan Skylines (there's an R32 GTR in my area) go through

Also there's the fact that California is a large percentage of the US as a whole, and if a car won't be street legal in California, it likely won't even be imported into the US period. I believe that's the reason we've never gotten the Skyline, lost the Supra, and never gotten many BMWs, VWs and Audis that are available in Europe, but not the US (Audi RS4, the legendary Audi RS2 etc..)

I completely share your hatred of the beaurocratic-socialist crap that happens in all forms of government. Just like the "noise pollution" crap laws. Until recently, no specific decibel level was even pointed out in the rule books for how loud a car can be. Further more, pigs dont carry ANY decibel reading equipment with them, so violations are PURELY subjective, even tpday with the 92 or95 db limit(I forgot what it was)pigs can basically give these types of tickets at their own discretion, which is crap seeing as they are al dicks, in my experience. Plus, they contradict themselves in their satupid laws about modifying exhausts. Exhausts lots of times make cars more efficient by bettering the restrictive factory exhausts. WHatever. Whatever makes money and any 'interests' that can make money and/or be taxed or regulated by the state will usually be passed by any "democratic" government. I can see how they can try and crack down on people that have that 1972 Chevy smoking out of the back on the freeways, but please.

now i'm not saying the government is right by any means, but the skyline was only not brought over because with the design of the rb20, it made it impossible to switch the steering column to LHD without redesigning the whole front end. it, in time, wouldn't be near cost effective for nissan. but i completely agree with the opinions stated above. there was a post about how bush is doin something about hydrogen research. that's a bunch of crap. bush is oil. car companies have researched alternative fuels for years and years and the government will actually put more money into stopping the companies than the companies would actually make from producing what they research in the first place. the world is going to crap simply because the american government and their oil money. the only reason why they are pushing the emmisions in cali is because putting more restrictions on the exhaust system and various components cause the car to work harder because of the lack of air flow which, intern, uses more fuel. and the reason why they're targeting cali is because that's where the majority of the country's perfromance modification products and ideas come from. think about it. i live in arkansas and i can run a straight pipe on my rx7. no cat, no muffler, just a straight pipe and nothing is said. we have no inspection either. why? because what, if anything, performance comes out of arkansas?

You wanna know what really stopped the skyline? Non OBDII compliancy...
Cock smokers huh....saddens me to no end. A good friend of mine has one of the few 50 state legal(yes even california) r32gtr's , sadly he was t-boned by a STI....again.....
Sounds like I need to move to Arkansas.....or further north in Alaska....no emissions, and you can run a SCORE truck on the road without a second look from the fuzz

it's not always a good thing though. you can get stuck behind a fog truck every now and then. THAT SUCKS. the only thing they will really get you for is for making an obvious pollution hazard. like when you're filling the cars behind you with a cloud of white smoke.
