If they have the money let them spend it, if u make 30,000 a year, and buy your kid a 10,000 dollar car, whats wrong with making 300,000 a year and buying your kid a 100,000 car? its the same damn thing. Doesnt matter how nice the car is. You guys sound like your saying first cars are supposed to be ugly. You can go fast and kill yourself in any car. You can look uber sexy in a BMW. Dont be jealous. I say instead of saying "Look at that spoilt kid" say "wow thats a nice M3, I hope he stays safe, and doesnt get hurt in it." "If he does, more parts for meeee!!!!"

IMHO, at least the poll results are showing that most are somewhat balanced in their views

My first car was a 93 4runner, and I loved it to death. I also treated it like shit. I never really washed it, went off roading, busted transmissions, threw it out of alignment, and treated it like a second closet. I always appreciated it, but I also made plenty of mistakes that could have cost me a lot if I wasn't so lucky. Mistakes that could have cost me a lot in an M3. Last month I bought myself a 328is, and have treated it completely different. I wash it all of the time, and take the time to keep it fit and healthy. It has transcended machinery, and become something much more dear to me. In short, I don't feel many 16 year olds can truly appreciate something that is handed to them. You have to work for something before you can truly comprehend it's value. Maybe I was a uniquely ungrateful 16 year old, but I feel like we need to become a little bit more mature and refined before we can truly appreciate what we have.

The way I see it is, no reason for a parent to ever get a 6 cylinder or higher for a beginner. With global warming, rising gas prices, and everything else going on, students only need a car to get from point A to point B in a timely manner. 4 cylinder cars do just that. I have nothing against people who start out with BMW's. As a matter of fact, I encourage everyone to get a BMW as a first car, because they are really safe. The first year should be with a economical car, so that way a teen can get a job to pay for the gas, the insurance, and have a little reward money. If the parent feels that the teen is well equipped to move onto something more powerful, then go ahead!

I don’t agree with 16 old kids driving bmw just because most of them not even have a clue how to take care of the car. Second thing a bmw is famous for is power and impressing handling but that’s on the hands of experts not beginners and kids tend to abuse of the laws of the physics and after crash... I thing 16 years old should start with cars that will give protection but not speed and gradually get better and like 19 or 20 with some road experience have the bimmi. That’s my opinion

can't believe this thread is replied to more than technical forums. being a parent my new outlook on things is pretty simple. if you have the ability (financially) to HELP your child purchase a car you will more than likely get them something you dig which is an older porsche or bmw, if you dig jap or american cars you will end up HELPING them get something like that. there will always be the 'rich' kid with their expensive non appreciated stuff. don't be upset when somebody your age has something nicer than you, they might actually appreciate what they have. the big issue is a 16 year old with any car!!! unless your kid has been karting or attending driving education courses, no 16 year old can NOT safely drive a car, we just had a frederick cop die after driving his car into some trees. he was 25, lost control of his rear wheel drive cop car and died. my child will not have the keys to a car untill they can pass a driver's education course, skid pad, defensive driving, etc. enjoy the car you have and stop worrying what the next guy has, enjoy life, it's very short.

I got my first car as a sixteen year old. 1995 E36 M3 still my daily driver and it's due to trust, hard work, and if your dad is a enthusiast and car collector. I took it up from him so i have much pride in my car. I make sure its always clean and i have no dings on it at all. It's all in what you work for.

| Four years ago when i turned 16 I got a 1973 BMW 2002. By no means was that a 20k car. But having that car taught me to appreciate everything so much more. I never take for granted getting into my 89 M3 and hearing it start with little hesitation. I never take for granted the AC or the heat of modern cars. That 2002, which i later put dual side draft weber carbs on, taught me how to handle unruly carbs on a cold day. Also what it was like to feel like you are wearing a car out and only doing 90 mph. Also starting with a classic gave me a sense of appreciation for all future BMWs. Yeah it might be a bad idea to give a 16 year old a brand new M3 but there is nothing wrong with starting with a BMW. | If the kid works their ass off for the car, they deserve it. If mom and dad hand you the keys to and E46 M3 on your 16th birthday your prevlidged and lucky while your parents are just stupid! |

... My first car was a Supra TT soooo all that made me do was want to work hard enough and use my brain to always be able to have nice things in life. Nothing wrong with it in my opinion. ![]()

| I would disagree about getting "a six cylinder car". You can get them an SN95 V6 mustang I see way too many 16-17 yr old kids driving newer M3's though. I was only 18 when I bought my Mustang Cobra. I paid for all of it, just that my dad had to co-sign the loan. Paid it off in 5 years then sold it for my M3.
