| i dont think the synchros are gone.. because the prob appeared right after i replaced my clutch. so i presume my mechanic forgot to tighten something there. i'll check it out when i'll go back home, coz here in UK, manual labour is extremely expensive, comparing to what i'm used to! )

| The only way it pops out of gear is if it is not all the way in gear. You have got to fix it quick or the end of the gear will chew. Normally it is just an adjustment but as things wear you have to shim up with new washers. I doubt it is the tranny but the linkage. I replaced a tranny in a Five series I use to have and the linkage took more time to set up right than putting the tranny back in. I have a really old Triumph 650 Thunderbird in the Garage and I can show you third and second gear out of the box. They suffered similar fates to your tranny. The Triumph Tranny is tiny beside the BMW but same principal. It would pop out of second and did it once too often. The "U" shaped internal carrier bent took out third and the lay shaft in 50' of pavement. Lucky I did not blow the casing it is hard to find 1952 Triumph parts in Canada. Lucky for me I have five engines and boxes full of Trannys and gears. The gears in the Getrag have a pointed tip and a reduced flat edge on the end of each gear. I believe this is where you are riding on third. In other words you only have about a half of the normal surface connection you should have. This will damage both the main and lay shaft gears. Unlike the Triumph your tranny will be a wright off if the gear jumps over a tooth, the lay shaft bearing will break the case. The main and lay shaft will both be bent. Take it back to the guy whom put the clutch in because this is part of setting up a new clutch. Is you peddle acting the same? Does the clutch engage to close to the floor? You should adjust the peddle also. |
