Engine Management System.

Hi. I have been searching for a while for a good ECU unit that i can tune. i was told by a friend to check out a unit called the MegaSquirt which is a great unit but I myself have no idea how to program an ecu from a blank board. any suggestions how i can get an ecu that i can do my own afr's and install soft wear for different things? the only things i've been finding are these lame chips. i'm kind of new on BMW's so it has been a little difficult to find a big variety of parts for my car i am running a 325 e36 95 with the 2.5 vanos.
