'shrinking' liscence plate

I was thinking about cutting off the top and bottom of my front plate to make it smaller, because I live in NY where you must have a front plate. Would this be legal, considering it is technically the 'state' issued plate, displayed in front? On my back plate the bracket covers most of these parts anyway. I know its a stretch, humor me...

Also, is displaying it in the windsheild allowed? I got mixed opinions.

From what ive heard, NY state police wont let you get away with anything, especially in Newyork city. I wouldnt provoke them if I was you

If its anything like California, its not legal in the least. But then again, the price we pay for living in Cali is gestapo-bullshit.

I can tell you first hand, tampering with the license plate at all is a big thing... I got arrested for having an LCD display with a picture of my license plate, where my license plate should have been.

Cut the top and bottom off.....especially in New York, and you could go to jail for defacing government property... I know you may think the plate is yours, but your actually supposed to return it when you get a new car or change your plate.... lol no one ever does though. Your borrowing it from the government. If you let someone borrow your M3 would you be pissed if it came back with the top and bottom cut off?

If you want the whole skinny plate look, by some real overseas plates, and put them on when you takin pictures and what not, thats what I used to do when I drove a Honda. But just so you know, alot of countries are already switching over to US style plates, so you might wanna think deeply if the 50 bux youll pay for the plates are worth it.

can't believe they arrested you for that, when some don't even have a plate.

i think i'm going to put the delete strip in the middle and put the plate off center, cause the huge plastic holder on the e36 is hideous. stupid that i have to have that shit on the front, obviously the law makers don't appreciate aesthetically pleasing cars.

on the lawmakers. they should just let us put out own plates on cars, wherever we want, as long as numbers are visible...

I have cars in this Island called Antigua and over there you have to have 2 plates as well, but they allow you to get custom numbers/letters on the front one only. At least in NY you could custom out both.

Doesnt bother me either way though. Here in PA we only need the back license plate, and mine is black and says FAST BMW.

P.S. They stopped making the black ones, its a D.A.R.E. edition, you have to already have one to get a custom one.

I ordered a custom German plate which actually matches my real license plate and keep my real plate in the window. Ive never had a problem in about 2 years but maybe cops in Seattle are more chill. I think i was actually pulled over for speeding once and the plate was never even mentioned.

I think its okay to keep the real one in the window, thats probably why you arent bothered, Its not altered, and its in a legal spot. When I got a roll pan for my truck I just velcroed my license plate to my back window and it wasn't a problem... The only thing I can think the cops could complain about is not seeing it at night, since there's no license plate light in your window.
