The AEM EMS is a damn good stand alone. That is what Buschur Racing uses on the worlds fastest Evo 8 drag car, and he also uses it on his Evo time attack car, which is consistently the fastest car of the day. The thing about the EMS, for people wanting to keep VANOS, I have heard EMS wont run it. Dont quote me on that though, as I cannot verify it. People do not keep the factory ECU simply because there is only so much you can reflash on it. With a stand alone, you can completely rewrite the cars brain to your setup. I am not exagerating with this, a 91 TSi AWD came in to a shop, with a factory ECU, and converted to an EMS with a buschur tune, and LITERLY picked up 80 AWHP just like that.

The standalone is a ecu that you can reprogram?
How hard is it to install?
How much to get one and tune it or can you tune it yourself?

If the standalone is direct fit, it plugs right in to your existing harnesses. If it isnt, you need to do some wiring. A EMS (AEM) runs around 1500-1900. I dont really know the price of a TEC3R to be honest. NO you should not attempt to tune it yourself. You can fuck up a motor with the quickness lol. Take it to a pro, and let them tune it on a dyno. You will pick up gobs of power, and it will be factory smooth. Yes, what a stand alone does, it replaces your ECU. It becomes your ECU. But you are programmer basically. Anything you want your ECU to do, you can make it. In addtion, you get data logging capabilities, which is a must.
