Why no Super Car From BMW?!!!

Lately it would seem that no matter what car magazine you pick up or what car show you watch, the Audi R8 is being talked about as the best and most civilized super car on the market. Horrifying to any BMW fan is the fact that BMW has absolutely nothing to compete with this vehicle. So, I pose the question why has BMW completely dropped the ball in this segment of the industry? It seems that they have totally ignored it since the creation of the original M1. I sincerely hope that the Audi R8 entices BMW to make another attempt at creating a car that can hang with a ferrari or lambo. I believe supercars also help bolster brand image as well.

The Audi R8 is definitely not a super car. In Audi's literature, they compare it to a Carrera 4S versus a similarly priced Porsche turbo.

I would rather see BMW invest the R&D money into their "regular" cars which regularly win awards versus magazine cover cars that only a select few can afford.

+1, I'm with James. The new 3 series won car of the world, and best car, and all that jazz. Audi has yet to do so.

The only Audi I'd own is the old Quattro, period.

There isn't an Audi around that can match a McLaren GTR, so I'm happy.

Amen... and halo cars traditionally end up costing the manufacturer financially. Not something bmw really needs right now.

Alright well, EVO loved the R8 and even liked it better than the porsche GT3, and Lambo that they tested against it as well as the new M3. In thier words it is the most reliable and civilized super car on the market. At only $100,000 I would say it is also reasonable obtainable. Top Gear and CAR also said the exact same thing practicaly word for word. So, I was pretty appauled.

I for one would love to see BMW come out with a new mid-engined amazing looking car for every BMW fan to lust over. But hey, that's just me I guess.

I heard there WAS a BMW supercar in the making... Stems from F1, as did McLaren's and the like... I just can't for the life of me remember the name of it right now

probably more based on their lemans car. hmm BMW doesnt have to create another supercar though. When everyone else did they said we'll do it not because we want to but because we can do it better and prove we are the best make. They did it, kicked some serious fuckin ass and dont have to prove themselves for atleast another few years by which time the (slightly younger than me) next generation have something to say: BMW is king.

The Z8 was a great car that no other car company compared to. The closest thing to it is probably an S2000, and it's got jack on it...

A 400bhp convertible. lol I want one, just saw one today.

I hate to break it to ya but the Z8 was a terrible car. That's why it wasn't very successful. It wasn't a good driver's car or an all out muscle car. It wasn't good for cornering or cruising. It had a hard ride which isn't good for cruising and handling that wasn't very good for tracking. So, basically whatever you wanted a car for it was not good at it. Beautiful but not useful for any purpose. Also extremely expensive for a car that wasn't technically talented at anything.

I couldn't agree more, dude... It wasn't a track car, or a great cruiser either.

But it has loads of appeal... And I'm sure all it's ills can be fixed up one way or another.

But you make it sound like a bathtub on wheels, it wasn't THAT bad.

the R8 is a good car but when it comes to track prowess would get its ass handed to it by the GT3. for the same price as an R8 i would rather have the GT3 RS.

i agree bmw for some time now has needed a supercar. they make unbelievable motors, but they should make a new supercar. the M1 was beautiful and a damn good show case for what bmw is capable of, if they could make the M1 when the company had half the resources their is no excuse why they cant make or produce one now.BMW need to do more than jsut give their supercar engines to cars like the mclaren F1.they need to make their own or a successor to the M1

Well, since we're on the topic, I had a VWRX last year. Basically, an old Beetle 1303S with a WRX motor up its ass.
