Sounds like if everything is compared to the e30 m3, then that one is the best.

The e46 was a back to basics design while keeping the same levels of luxury as the e36. The e30 however still remains by far the best drivers car. The e46 is not a watered down version of the e36 but rather the other way around. Handling and power to weight ratios are better on the e46. You need a different reason to choose the e36 over the e46. The only real reason there is would be the obvious price difference. That's about it. OTher than that the e46 is superior to the e36 in every tangible way. The e30 beats the e46 in handling but the e46 beats the e30 in amenities and luxury so in my mind its a toss up between those two depending on what you want from your car. I'm pretty sure most people who voted for the e36 are doing so mainly because they can actually afford one or know some one who has one. The e46 is unattainable by most still and that is deffinitely a drawback. But, that is really its only drawback.
Having driven and owned both of them (my mother has an E46 ///M) I will whoeheartedly agree. They went a little less conservative with the E46, different wider fenders, lots of engine sound in the cabin, raw peaky engine, etc. Its absolutely a great standard out of the box car.

The E30 was the most rugged car of its day. The M1 deserves a lot more play than it gets. I mean, come on, it pretty much started the department. Without the M1, no one would even have an M3. Even though BMW didn't design the whole car, the car kinda designed ///M. Taking nothing away from the E30 M3, I would say the M1 is not only the most important car in ///M history, its definately the 'best' M-car ever created.

I am in love with the E36 M3, so my vote naturally goes with that.

I'm gonna have to put my vote in for the e36 M3. Kinda disappointing to hear the results of the e36 but I can clearly understand the reasoning behind the e30.

even if later on e36 m3 has more votes than e30 e30 is the godfather of M imo. just look at mariano's e30 M3. just love it. e36 m3 is 2nd for me though if i had to pick between e30 and e36 m3 it would be e36 m3 because ive wanted one since i was a child but as i take the keys of the e36 m3 i would look at the e30 as i drive off the driveway pure sexx the e30 is. has more soul than anything on that list.

Yeah kinda hard to compare, but I say E30 M3, cause it's the car M was originally all about. It's not about huge these overweight cars with mad power. And the E36 M3, I hope you're not talkin about he US spec.

The e92 m3 is badass but personally I think putting a v8 in it makes it a whole different car and belongs in an m5. I own an e36 m3 and it is my favorite M however, I think that the e46 m3 is the best and cant help but love the originality and charm of the e30 m3. I'd have to say an m6 would be my least favorite but dont know much about em... LONG LIVE ///M POWER!!!
