An assembly line ///M like the e30 or 36 could never be as special to me as either of the two hand built ///M5s (e28 and e34).

But the e30 ///M3 sure is a nice car...

nope, they were built on the same assembly line at the same plant. Unique body panels etc but built on the same assembly line... you might want to research a bit more.

They weren't built at Garching.

"Where was the E30 M3 produced?
Because of the relatively high production numbers required to homologate the M3, production took place at the normal Munich-Milbertshofe factory instead of in the more limited Motorsport facility in Garching. However, unlike the normal E30 models, the M3's drivetrain was assembled by special teams, then mated to the chassis on the regular assembly line."

BMW M Registry - FAQ E30 M3

The drivelines were assembled offthe production line, but it is a production assembled car. Not a hand built.

NO DOUBT, the e46 M3 is freaking amazing, but man, I fell in love with my 1998 e36 sedan. LOVE THAT CAR. I think even If I do end up buying a newer e46 sometime in life I would never get rid of my e36. NEVA NEVAAA...yeah furthermore I think the 2008 M3 looks to nice, don't get me wrong it does look a little aggressive but I love how the e46 M3 just looks at you, it's like it's saying don't mess with me, even when it's parked. CRAZY

I agree with that. And I'm almost certain that most bmw owners fall in love with their first bmw and never want to give it up. It's almost like your first love, and it's hard to love another like you love(d) your first.

Nice to see all the responses!! Every ///M car is awesome in so many characteristics anyways, each answer is pretty much valid. Itd be nice to have some specific parameters that this "best" ///M car created need to meet because they all serve so many purposes so damn well!!!

That is true, but only because most people don't want an E36 M3 so the price has come way, way down. My opinion of course.

My first car was an E30 M3 and would love to go find it and buy it abck one day, unbelievable car. I worked at a two BMW shops during highs chool and college and I've driven most of the ///M Cars including the Z8 (Not a real M car but..) and the E30 M3 is still my favorite. Probably somehting to do with me owning one, but it fees like it has soul, adn definitely still the most race oriented of the M3's.

Another great car was the E28 M5, if you haven't driven one see if someone wil let you because its an eye-opener. They are fast, and they track extremely well.

I am a lifelong BMW lover but the E36 3-Series has left a permanent bad taste in my mouth, jsut never warmed to the design. IMO, the E36 3er has started to look just plain dated while the E30 has the look of a classic.

My top five: 1) E30 M3 2-5, No order) E28 M5, E36 M Coupe (Something about the clown-shoe), E39 M5, E34 M5

There are three M5's in there, because theres just something special about a four-door, five-seat, family sedan doing 155+ that can beat up on almost anything on the road.

I would say the E30 or E36 M. I like the E30 the most for driving purity, but the E36 M most for the power. I would go E36. I would not go E46. I do not want to offend anyone, and please let me mention, I would give my LEFT AND RIGHT nuts for a E46 M. But I wouldnt call it the best M. It is watered down to me. It is heavier, and to me doesnt offer the purest experience. The E30 satisifies with no driver aids. The E46 is too intrusive. The E92 is not a true M to me.

Ummm.. The e46 M3 is actually considered to be a more pure drivers car than the e36. They got it closer to the e30s handling with the e46 and that was done on purpose because the e36 was lacking severely compared to the original e30. The e46 was a back to basics design while keeping the same levels of luxury as the e36. The e30 however still remains by far the best drivers car. The e46 is not a watered down version of the e36 but rather the other way around. Handling and power to weight ratios are better on the e46. You need a different reason to choose the e36 over the e46. The only real reason there is would be the obvious price difference. That's about it. OTher than that the e46 is superior to the e36 in every tangible way. The e30 beats the e46 in handling but the e46 beats the e30 in amenities and luxury so in my mind its a toss up between those two depending on what you want from your car. I'm pretty sure most people who voted for the e36 are doing so mainly because they can actually afford one or know some one who has one. The e46 is unattainable by most still and that is deffinitely a drawback. But, that is really its only drawback.

I disagree. The E46 is much heavier, and I dont really personally care that much about luxuries when I go for a drivers car. The E46 Ms S54 motor, personally, isnt as impressive and easy to work with as the S50/2.
