I made this post on BF.c a couple weeks ago, but should have thought to post it here too, or here instead.
I just wanted to tell everyone how much I love my car. It is everything that I wanted it to be. I've been looking for an E39 M5, but the wife says that I would have to sell my Beast and I'm not sure that I can do that. Sure I break a few parts here and there, but it's always my fault.
In the last few months I've snapped my driveshaft at the dragstrip while using drag radials, and last week just before my road trip I shattered my CV Joint. But if I drove it like a normal car, I would have no issues. I'd prefer to break things on occasion and have fun with it though. I just finished a 1300 mile road trip by myself, so I had a lot of time to think about it.
I love to drive. I've always enjoyed driving "fun cars". I used to make my road trips in a 300ZX, but now that car mostly sits until I break the Bimmer. I drove the Z for a couple days last week since I had to order the CV joint.
Also, for those wondering I tried to keep track of my gas mileage and driving style, I'll break it down. The road trip was 600+ miles each direction, from Fort Hood, TX to El Paso, TX. I filled up with gas before I began, and at each stop.
The first part of the drive was mostly a two lane highway that went through little towns. So there was a mix of stop lights, and freeway speeds. I drove 70-90 when not in town, with an occasional dip into triple digits. I went 180.7 miles and used 7.971 gallons, so I averaged about 22.67 MPG.
Next was mostly freeway driving. It was night, I drove between 75 and 95, probably averaging somewhere in the area of 85-90 for this leg. Again, I dipped into triple digits a few times. 196.5 miles and 8.361 gallons = 23.5 MPG
I drove a bit faster on the third leg because someone tried to pass me, I don't know what he was thinking. I had about 50-75 miles of triple digit speeds, and other than that cruised between 80-90. I also had some surface street driving since it was my last stop, and I didn't get gas again until I was getting back on the freeway to start my trip home. 250.1 miles and 10.502 gallons for 23.8 MPG.
I only made 1 stop on the way back, my light was on when I got gas. I tried to drive more conservatively, and averaged about 85. I didn't have much variance of speed one way or the other, and it was all freeway. 355.3 miles and 14.275 gallons for 24.89 MPG.
The last part of the trip saw a lot of stop light driving driving, and surface streets. I didn't get gas until after going to work. 278.8 miles and 13.144 gallons for 21.21 MPG.
I normally can't stay off the gas for daily driving, so my gas mileage is generally in the high teens or low 20's.
Just though I would share though, I love my car.
