You could try buying a second hand starter... there's no harm in trying it - and it shouldnt be so expensive.

If you dont want to spend the money on a starter you can use your battery to test it.....just remove it and attach the two ends of the battery to the proper connections and if it spins then its good...another thing that it could be EMS, but I'm not sure if the e36 has it....my friend had a problem with this on his 2005 325ci....took it to a stealer and got it fixed...

I would first look at the connections, if they are all good I would then test the starter. If it turns out the starter is good I would bring in outside help. Good luck, and use Bill if you need some help.

All connections appear to be good. will test the starter.. but i cant bring outside help cuz that cost $ and i have depleted mine..

Another thing is that i was thinking that the alarm might not be letting the car start. everytime i connect my battery my hazards turn on. it would make sence if the siren goes off too but its broken and never worked since i got the car. its not a stock bmw security system cuz i disconnected that off and it still didnt even click. starter is connected the right way so i should be the aftermarket alarm syster... but i cant find where the hell they tucked it in..... checked everywhere. under steering wheel, under the dashboard. in the trunk by the amplifier, on the other side of the trunk... nothing... friday is my deadline.. gotta get it out of there or tow it out...

even a dead starter would click, sounds like an electric short. If you can find your alarm, start there. there should be an inline fuse, pull it and try again. Also, did you use the same ecu, or another one?

the ECU is the same. what i got was a 1992 325is motor wit 30K on it. it has been sitting arround for a while but it runs very good. good compression. i used my harness because the one from the 92 motor has different fittings for the ecu but everything else is the same and a perfect fit. any ideas where the alarm could be??? the bmw security system/keyless entry is under the dash and i looked all over for the aftermarket alarm but i cant find it. the car has a remote start antenna and a non working siren( not the horn ) and i was thinking of following the remote start antenna cable but my hands are too dirty all the time and i dont wanna mess up the interior and thats the one thing i dont have problems with.. its white and clean... if you know what i mean...

Well the problem my friend had with the EMS was that it thought that someone tried to steal the car and as a result the car showed the same symptoms as your car. So I dont think its like onstart, correct me if I'm wrong but its something worth looking into. Maybe someone else knows more about it, Im just talking from past experience.

that really makes me think. cuz before i blew my motor my alarm wouldnt work. my remote lit up and everything but the car wouldnt lock, unlock, arm or disarm the alarm. so i had the battery disconnected for 3 weeks and now when i connected it the alarm armed automaticly. i took the bmw security system out and the antenna cable wasnt connected.. it fell out or something.. and that would explain why the remote wouldnt work.. hmm.. i hope thats it.. i really do... thanks man i will check that... if i can find my remote..lol after it didint work i got pissed and threw it somewhere..

IMO it sounds like the alarm causing you grief. Seems like the starter wires got a cutout relay on it, if its aftermarket alarm you could try chasing the starter wire and see if you come to a relay, if you find one you could then chase the trigger wire off that to find the alarm box, of course you've probably pulled the dash half apart by then... Car only running for 5-6 seconds after a roll start seems to suggest the possibility of a secondary imobilisation circuit running on the fuel pump, you need to disarm the alarm!

Try 'jumping' the starter (if you can get to it) take off the solenoid trigger wire and give it a direct touch of 12v, should see it jump into life.. if not the starters probably faulty.
